Patient-Centered Research with Dr. Francesca Tentori

Arbor Research embraces patients as partners in research. Dr. Francesca Tentori leads a new research group to advance patient-centered research. In an interview in our 2016 Annual Report, she outlined her vision for this work.

How did you first become interested in patient-centered research?
I trained as a nephrologist in Italy. I came to the US to work with the Zuni Indians - that was my first experience with population-based research and observational studies.

How has your recent work shaped your thinking about research that speaks directly to patients?
The experience of working with patients as collaborators has really been eye opening for me. I have always listened to patients and wanted to learn from them, but I had never had the opportunity to do so in a research setting...it really opened my eyes to a completely different experience.

Can changes in quality of life predict mortality in hemodialysis patients?

Lead author Dr. Jeffrey Perl
Measures of Health-Related Quality of Life have consistently demonstrated much lower quality of life among hemodialysis patients compared to the general population and to those with other chronic medical conditions. In a study published in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, investigators hypothesized that a decline in HR-QOL would be associated with increased risk of death.

New paper from A2ALL investigates risk factors for early allograft dysfunction

After living donor liver transplantation, a recipient may experience complications with the transplanted organ soon after surgery, including Early Allograft Dysfunction (EAD). In a paper published in Transplantation, researchers sought to characterize EAD after living donor liver transplantation and to develop models to predict the risk of dysfunction.
