Simplified Phosphate Binder Pill Regimen

Could Improve Health

Hemodialysis patients often have many health problems in addition to their kidney disease. They are often prescribed many oral medications, including phosphate binders, contributing to a high "pill burden."

New research from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) examines data on pill burden, whether patients reported that they were taking their prescribed phosphate binder pills, and measurements of serum phosphorus and parathyroid hormone levels in patients. EURODOPPS Announces Proposal Winners

EURODOPPS is a joint venture that brings together the strengths of two initiatives - the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) and the ERA-EDTA Registry - in collecting and analyzing epidemiological data on hemodialysis patients in Europe.

EURODOPPS asked for proposals from external investigators for possible data analyses; at the 52nd ERA-EDTA Congress in London, they announced seven winning proposals.
  •  Christiane Brechsler (Wurzburg) Beta blockers, cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in diabetic dialysis patients
  •  Sophie Liebeuf (Amiens) Impact of therapeutic practices on patient cardiovascular outcomes in dialysis patients
  • Sabine van der Veer (Manchester) Using patient-level characteristics to predict fistula maturation: development and validation of a prognostic model
  • Flore Duranton (Montpellier) Geographical factors and seasonal patterns of blood pressure in dialysis patients
  • James Fotheringham (Sheffield) Modification of the "Long Gap" phenomenon by treatment time and compliance
  • Ionut Nistor (Iasi) Effects of glucose-lowering treatments in patients with type 2 diabetes on dialysis
  • Albert Power (Bristol) Impact of stroke on quality of life measures in hemodialysis
