Vascular Access Trends from the DOPPS Practice Monitor

Researchers led by Dr. Ron Pisoni published new information on vascular access use and patient preferences. Analyzing data from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) Practice Monitor (DPM), the authors found that fistula use is increasing among hemodialysis patients in the United States, although approximately 70 percent of patients begin dialysis with a catheter. This publication examines differences in vascular access by race and makes international comparisons. For more findings and information about this paper, please click here.

Want to learn more about the latest trends in US dialysis practice from the DPM?
Investigators will host a free, public Web conference to discuss the latest data on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 3 p.m. EDT. Please click here to register for this event.

New Research Validates Association Between High IV Iron Doses and Mortality

Intravenous (IV) iron is required for optimal management of anemia in the majority of hemodialysis patients. Prescription of IV iron has increased over time, but the best dosing strategy is unknown and the effects on patient survival are unclear. A new study from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) examines the associations between IV iron dose and clinical outcomes. To learn more, please click here.
