International Differences in Bacteremia Rates in Hemodialysis Patients in the DOPPS: Strong Relationship with Catheter Use.

Dr. Hugh Rayner will present results from DOPPS phase 5 (2012-2014) demonstrating wide variation in country bacteremia rates and a strong correlation between bacteremia rates the country prevalence of catheters as a vascular access.

 

 

Changes in Hemoglobin under the Dialysis Prospective Payment System (PPS) by Facility Payer Mix.

Dr. Marc Turenne will present a study of Medicare dialysis patients treated in independent dialysis facilities, examining the potential implications of the recent Medicare dialysis payment reform for health disparities related to anemia management. Recent facility-level trends in hemoglobin levels are compared based on the percentage of patients with employer insurance, as one factor that may affect the ability of facilities to manage financial risks under the new payment system. 

 

 

Understanding the Recent Increase in Ferritin Levels in US Dialysis Patients

Angelo Karaboyas will present a look at the dramatic rise in ferritin levels in US hemodialysis patients from 2010 to 2012, coincident with changes to reimbursement and ESA prescribing information. This study takes advantage of the practice variation in DOPPS facilities to investigate the role of IV iron and ESA dosing on changes in ferritin levels.
