Mother's Day 2015

A Message from the Hendrickson Family

Mother's Day is about here, which means the busiest time of our season is upon us.  Both K&A locations will be fully stocked for the upcoming weekend, and we're confident you'll be pleased with the diversity and quality of our plants.

While the days are starting to feel summer-like, be sure to keep an eye on the overnight low temperatures for the next couple weeks. You may still need to protect annuals if the temps dip below the 40-degree mark.

It's about time to put veggies and herbs in the garden! We have a great selection of organic veggies and herbs from West Star Organics this season, which includes a wide variety of heirloom tomatoes, which are some of our favorites:) Get em' while you can!

It's been great seeing so many familiar faces so far this season, and we're looking forward to a great 2015 season.

Happy Mother's Day!

 -Chris, Angie, & Leif Hendrickson

Annual Containers

Do you want long-lasting, low-maintenance annual containers this summer? Stop in and we'll help you choose an arrangement of plants suited to your desires. We have an extensive selection of "thrillers," "fillers," and "spillers" that will make your annual arrangement look great all season long. Whether you're looking for traditional or unique arrangements, our staff would love to help you create show-stopping containers today!

If you're running short on time, we'd also be happy to plant your containers for you.  Just drop off your pots along with some key information (the type of light it will receive, color preferences, etc.) and we will arrange and plant your containers in return for the cost of the plants, soil, and labor. Planter

Also, start your containers off on the right foot by replacing last year's soil with a Fafard potting mix.  Fafard soil is the best around, and we carry it in a variety of bag sizes.  Each type of soil has slow release fertilizer and water retention components that will help your annuals thrive all season.

So pick up some Fafard soil today and get those pots ready for planting---we'll even load the soil into your car for you!
Start Your Plants Off on the Right "Root"

In addition to Fafard brand soils and compost, we are also carrying locally made compost this season.  Compost is an excellent way to improve the soil quality of your gardens and containers.  It adds organic matter and nutrients, helps retain moisture, and improves the root structure of plants.  We currently are carrying a line of Purple Cow products (activated compost and Tomato Gro!), which is based in Middleton, WI.

We are also happy to be carrying locally made vermicompost this season.  Worm Works by Franke is based in Mt. Horeb, WI.  Franke collects tons of food waste (literally) from his community and uses it to produce excellent compost with the help of his red wigglers. It's black gold!  Use it to make compost tea or mix it in directly with the soil for an added boost to your plants this season.  Visit Franke's Facebook page for more information:

Busy Bees

We all know how important honeybees are for pollination, but bees across the country are having a rough time lately due to colony collapse disorder.  One possible factor contributing to this problem is the use of neonicotinoid pesticides.  For that reason, we have chosen to only use non-neonicotinoid pesticides when its necessary to treat our plants, and use them very sparingly at that.
Our newest colony of bees arrived recently and are gearing up for a busy nectar flow. Here's to a happy and healthy hive in 2015!
