A Message from the Hendrickson Family

We're very excited to be starting another season this Friday! Months of ordering, planting and pinching have led up to this weekend. We owe a huge THANK-YOU to our planting crew this season. Their hard work and dedication shows through in the quality of our plants. We think you'll be happy with the results.

Though it's not normally safe to plant annuals outside until after mid-May, you can still safely begin your gardening season this time of year with perennials or cool season annuals. With any plants purchased during the early spring, be sure to watch the forecast and provide protection anytime the temperatures are near freezing or below. If you are not ready to start gardening yet but need a touch of spring, feel free to stop by for a leisurely stroll through our greenhouses. It's guaranteed to lift your spirits:)

As always, we look forward to seeing many familiar faces this season and want to thank everyone for their patronage. As a small family-owned business, we could not exist without the support of our local community.

Cold-Tolerant Annuals

The average last frost in Southern Wisconsin normally occurs in mid-May, but you can safely enjoy the cheerful color of annuals before that by choosing cold-tolerant varieties. Cold-tolerant annuals are those plants that can withstand several light frosts without any ill effect. This doesn't necessarily mean they can survive a hard freeze, but they hold up well at temperatures hovering around freezing.

Cheerful Pansies!

Both locations will have a great supply of pansies and other cold-tolerant annuals when we open this weekend. Pansies and violas are well known as cool season annuals but these aren't the only options available.

Other cold-tolerant annuals that we will have in stock include:

Showy Pericallis

Nemesia

Diascia

Snapdragons

Alyssum

Osteospermum

Petunias

Calibrachoa

Lobelia

Torenia

Verbena

Pericallis

You may find that some of these cool season annuals will begin to go dormant in the heat of the summer, but with some pinching back and fertilizing, they often bounce back in late summer when cooler temperatures return.

Spring To-Do List:

Sharpen your garden tools
Cut back ornamental grasses
Cut back any dead plant material that wasn't removed in the fall
Divide any perennials that need splitting or rejuvenating
Rake leaves from beds if they were not removed in the fall
Spread finished compost on the gardens
Apply a fresh layer of mulch to gardens
Prune back spring blooming shrubs after blooming has ended (lilacs, forsythia, spirea, rhododendrons, etc.)
If still remaining, remove used potting soil from containers and window boxes and replace with a fresh potting mix in preparation for annual plantings.
