Sacramento, CA (November 30, 2012) --
Californians voted November 6th to overwhelmingly approve the Senate district maps drawn by the Citizens Redistricting Commission (CRC). Proposition 40, which asked voters to either approve or reject the Senate district maps drawn by the CRC in a public process in 2011, had "Vote Yes" support from California Common Cause, National Federation of Independent Business, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, League of Women Voters, AARP California, California Chamber of Commerce, California Democratic Party, and the California Republican Party. The Proposition's original backers, who had sought a "No" vote that would have required the maps to be redrawn, withdrew their opposition to the original maps and joined in urging voters to approve the CRC's Senate district maps.
"The Commission is gratified by the public's support for what are, in fact, the first district maps that truly belong to the voters of the State of California. The Commission's charge to draw maps in a fair, non-partisan, and transparent manner came from measures the voters approved in 2008 and 2010, and we are pleased that the passage of Proposition 40 provides concrete evidence that an overwhelming majority of Californians agree that we performed our duties well." said Stan Forbes, current chair of the Commission.
The California Citizens Redistricting Commission continues to serve as a source of information on the redistricting process for Assembly, Senate, Congressional, and Board of Equalization districts.
