Greetings! Congratulations to William and Kate on the Birth of their new baby boy, every new life is a joy and we wish them well for the future. Another little boy Johan was born recently in Cambridge, thank you to parents Naveen and Jono for allowing Julia, Birthlight teacher and doula, to share their inspiring birth story in this newsletter.
A reminder to grab the early bird tickets for our Birthlight conference in the 'Womb to World' series with a focus on 'Gentle birth and gentle mothering' on 14 September. Dr Sarah Buckley will be speaking along with many other interesting presenters. Hope to see you there.
Another conference to look out for, exciting news, Françoise and Wendy have been invited to speak at the ICM Conference for midwives in Prague 2014. A wonderful opportunity to show how incorporating Birthlight practices into midwives knowledge and skills will enhance their practice and improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
As a mum who had her last baby at the age of 45, I am very aware of some of the challenges women experience when seen as older mothers. Thank you to Claudia for your piece in this newsletter explaining the information you have gathered and your very positive approach, which will help many teachers support women in their classes. I was lucky to have a wonderful midwife Julie who believed wholeheartedly in the Birthlight approach and I had a wonderful birth with my son Fyn. Recently Julie's daughter attended my classes and I send my love to all the family.
Best wishes to all the in Birthlight family Enjoy the summer Sally

A birth story - Julia East
Naveen attended the Trumpington pregnancy yoga classes during her second pregnancy. She asked me about supporting her and her husband during the birth as a doula and I was delighted to accept. It was all rather 'last minute' and on the day I met her husband Jono she was already having signs of early labour. I encouraged her to rest and went home to organise my own family. At around 10.30pm I received the call. MoreWe'd love to feature more birth stories, if you have one you'd be happy to share then please send to helen@birthlight.com.

Womb to World 14 September 2013 Early Bird Booking - just a few days left!
Title: 'Gentle birth and gentle mothering' Main speaker: Dr Sarah Buckley Venue: William Harvey Theatre, Addenbrookes, Cambridge, UK When: 14 September 2013 We are running an 'Early Bird' promotion to allow you to get your tickets at an even better price, this offer ends on 1 August 2013. Early bird conference price for a Birthlight member is just £30!It's a pleasure to welcome Dr Sarah Buckley and her family to Cambridge this summer and we have organised this day around her in our Womb to World Cambridge conference series just before she returns to Australia in mid September. This time our venue is on the Addenbrookes site, where the Rosie maternity hospital is located and in it the (still new and wonderful) midwives-run birth unit. Each Womb to World event brings together researchers and practitioners committed to promote a greater quality of care around maternity in both hospital and community environments. As a GP and mother who became a champion of 'gentle birth' in Australia, Sarah Buckley has put all her passion and extensive skills to the cause of helping women have optimal experiences of pregnancy, birth and early mothering. She is a wonderfully clear presenter, drawing together all the strands of relevant research and practice that offer supporting evidence for avoiding or reducing interventions. Anyone who wishes to gain a thorough yet manageable understanding of the interplay of hormones during pregnancy and birth can be certain to receive this from Sarah, with a light touch and a few good laughs included. The term 'inspiring' is overused but truly applies to Sarah. She embodies a model of care that is evidence-based and viable, congenial with grassroots initiatives like Birthlight in making research findings accessible in practical and enjoyable ways. Other presentations include: 'On delayed cord clamping: the research evidence' by Dr David Hutchon, Retired Obstetrician, Darlington Memorial Hospital Francoise Freedman, Wendy Gadsden and Sally Lomas will present 'Birthlight's practical innovative cultural fusion programme to promote continuity of care and support for women and families locally and globally' Other presentations planned are the Brazelton baby assessment, Kangaroo care in practice and light on epigenetics. This day packed full with relevant and applicable knowledge will be invaluable to Birthlight teachers as well as to doulas and midwives. Book now and more information

 Having babies later in life
When I interviewed Françoise Freedman for my book on later pregnancy and motherhood (Right Time Baby - The Complete Guide to Later Motherhood, Hay House 2011) I was 41 and the proud mum of a beautiful two year-old son. Françoise was one of the experts I sought out in order to gain more insight into women having babies after 35. More

Birthlight offers original adaptations of classic yoga practices in water as Aqua Yoga. In water, yoga is made more accessible irrespective of fitness. Aqua Yoga increases mobility for all, whether beginners or advanced yoga practitioners, tentative or confident swimmers. In contrast to other forms of water exercise in which the water is mostly used for resistance, Aqua Yoga fluid moves are based on all the qualities of water.

Birthlight Yoga for Maternity Professionals Level 2 & 1 14-15, 17-19 June 2014
London
Birthlight Yoga for Maternity Professionals aims to enhance women's comfort during pregnancy and labour and to reduce the need for medical intervention in childbirth with carefully selected and tested adaptations of yoga. 'Birthlight Yoga' teachers will be able to impart to pregnant and labouring women the understanding and skills they require in order to be positively involved in their birth experience, however the process unfolds at the time.
