Canadian Transportation Act Review & Investing in Newfoundland Tourism
TIAC welcomes the announcement of the Canada Transportation Act (CTA) Review Panel's report, and the $1.2 million investment in Newfoundland and Labrador tourism initiatives

On February 25th, minister of Transport Marc Garneau tabled the CTA review in the House of Commons. The report is the result of several years of public and industry consultation about the state of transportation in Canada, including industries like passenger air and rail that are crucial to the movement of people in our industry. We were pleased to note that all recommendations by the National Roundtable for Travel and Tourism were put forward in the report. We look forward to working with the Ministry of Transport as they work to implement the recommendations of the report, including making major changes to the user-pay plus that burdens travellers traveling to and within Canadian destinations.

We were also pleased to hear the announcement by Minister for Small Business and Tourism, Bardish Chagger, promising a
$1.2 million to support tourism initiatives by the Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation, the Gros Morne Cooperating Association, Gros Morne Summer Music Inc. and the Nunatsiavut Government. This investment in tourism signals the government's enthusiasm to support the tourism industry.

IRCC Introduces eTA Leniency Period
Transition period to extend through busy summer tourist season

In response to a  letter from TIAC and our industry partners in the National Round Table on Travel and Tourism, which raised concerns over potential negative impacts on the high summer season,  the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced it will offer a grace period to incoming travellers who have not applied through the new Electronic Travel Authorization Program (eTA). As of March 15, 2016 it will be legally mandatory for incoming visitors from visa- waiver countries other than the United States to have an eTA upon entering Canada, yet leniency will be shown to those who are caught unaware of the new requirement. The leniency period is meant to last until fall 2016, in hopes of making sure that Canada's busy summer tourism season remains as easy and stress-free for travellers as possible.

TIAC supports the government's decision to provide leniency over the summer tourism season while continuing  to encourage all required travellers to obtain an eTA for travel to Canada. For more information on the eTA program, please click here.

Manitoba Seeks a Commitment to Marketing Proposal
Manitoba Chamber of Commerce awaits action on funding proposal
On  March 1st, Chuck Davidson of the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce wrote an opinion piece on the proposed 96/4 proposal for provincial tourism marketing funding. Despite a throne speech endorsement of the proposal last fall from the provincial government, the tourism industry is still waiting for action to ensure this marketing funding is allocated. According to the article, "The MCC is calling for a full commitment by all parties to implement this sustainable investment model ... Following through on the investment model could increase annual tourism expenditures by more than 35 per cent to $2.1 billion by 2020, with an increased potential to deliver $288 million in new money as well as an additional $46 million in tax revenue to the province."

Marketing is a key priority for TIAC. Competitive and sustainable long-term funding for tourism marketing is important for all levels of government. We look forward to seeing the results of the 94/6 implementation in Manitoba.
