TIAC CEO Addresses the Finance Committee
|
On February 17th, President and CEO Charlotte Bell presented TIAC's pre-budget submission to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance (FINA). The 2016 pre-Budget process was truncated to four days of hearings and TIAC was one of only 89 total witnesses invited to testify. TIAC focused on the need to increase Destination Canada's budget so international visitors are aware that the low dollar makes it an ideal time to travel to Canada. TIAC also argued that the additional marketing investment is needed to compensate for the approximate 30% loss of buyer power for marketing internationally. See Charlotte's appearance at the 19:05:17 minute mark here or read her presentation here.

Canada made a big splash at this past weekend's Boston Globe Travel Show which attracts over 23,000 annual attendees. Under the Connecting America program, TIAC and Destination Canada presented a Canada Pavilion featuring over 20 partners from 5 provinces in one of the top 5 US source markets. The Team Canada delegation was strengthened by Canada's Minister of Small Business and Tourism Hon. Bardish Chagger, and Canada's Consul General to Boston David Alward who attended the show, participated in the activations and engaged dozens of show-goers on the incredible experiences Canada has to offer every type of traveller.
The Connecting America program is a top priority and TIAC's CEO Charlotte Bell, and Vice President's Jennifer Taylor, Ken Ross and Rob Taylor and Destination Canada's Chief Marketing Officer Jon Mamela were on hand for the weekend to manage the Canada Pavilion and to learn firsthand how to improve this initiative in US cities in the coming years.

By the Numbers - December
|
A new monthly piece in the TIAC talks will give updates on international visitation numbers to Canada. These numbers correlate with industry performance.
This month, December 2015 numbers were released, and we are pleased to see that overall we have seen a +7.5% increase in visitors to Canada! We are also pleased to see an increase of 8.3% in U.S. visitors in 2015. Also interesting, visitation from Brazil ended the year at an impressive +12.2% boost YTD; some of this is certainly due to the boost from the Pan Am games, but several positive months should allow us to remain optimistic about opportunities in this market. Mexico also ended the year strong, with +30% visitations over December 2014, and +13.7% growth YTD. This is over double the growth of 2013 for the Mexican market, and we can look forward to continued market growth with the promised visa lift this year.

Province announces partnership with Airbnb
|
On Friday February 19th, the Government of Ontario announced the launch of a new pilot project in partnership with Airbnb. The project will seek to grow the potential of the sharing economy through informing consumers and homeowners on regulations.
The pilot project is meant to educate consumers and homeownersabout their rights and responsibilities when offering or purchasing accommodations through organizations such as Airbnb. The project will focus on raising awareness of:
- Tax laws
- Consumer protection rights
- Accessibility requirements
- Safety regulations
According to the province, research has shown the sharing economy can lead to benefits such as "cost savings and greater choice for consumers as well as increased access to capital for small start-ups".
