Tourism Industry Priorities
Priorities to focus on for 2016
If Canada's travel and tourism industry is to reach its full potential as an economic driver of growth and job creation, federal leadership is needed to move forward on a National Tourism Accord. Here are some of the challenges TIAC would like to see a national accord focus on:
- Canada's inadequate international marketing budget is seriously reducing the ability to generate demand in key markets;
- Although there has been some progress, accessibility of travel visas is still a major hinderance for potential incoming tourists;
- The tourism industry is currently experiencing a significant labour shortage, particularly in Western provinces;
- Canadian tourism experiences need reliable investment in product development in order to stand out in a competitive global travel market.
TIAC has set forth a series of recommendations to government to help the industry overcome these challenges. Tourism has always been a stable driver of the Canadian economy yet its potential remains largely untapped due to the barriers mentioned here. Recent Ministerial Tourism Appointments
| Alberta's new Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ricardo Miranda, was sworn in on February 2nd. We look forward to working with the minister on the challenges western provinces face, including labour shortages and funding for international marketing.

Julie Boulet, the MNA for Laviolette, was sworn in on January 28 as Quebec's new Minister of Tourism. TIAC is eager to collaborate with her on several industry priorities and challenges. Congratulations to Minister Boulet!

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) Effective in March
Take Advantage of Voluntary Enrolment Before March 16, 2016
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a new Canadian visa entry requirement for travellers from countries that currently do not need a visa for entry (US citizens excluded).
A voluntary enrolment period for eTA was introduced in August 2015, as a way of avoiding possible issues at Canadian borders. The requirement will be mandatory as of March 16, 2016. Be sure to take the time to inform your customers of the change throughout the remainder of the voluntary enrollment period which continues until March 15, 2016.
TIAC is keeping in close contact with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and will continue to update members through our TIAC Talk newsletter and our website.

Tourism HR Looking to Better Grasp Difficulties Facing Tourism Businesses
Tourism HR Canada (formerly the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council) has released their annual survey for industry partners and stakeholders.
This survey will help Tourism HR focus on our industry's areas of greatest concern. Their aim is to continue to be responsive to the needs in the labour market to ensure that tourism businesses can thrive. The survey is open until February 29, 2016 and results will be posted on Tourism HR's website for information. If you are a member of the Canadian tourism industry, TIAC encourages you to participate in this survey to further understand the changing needs of our industry.
