Team Canada Heads to New York Times Travel Show
Marketing Canada at U.S. Consumer Travel Shows
This past weekend, TIAC and Destination Canada presented a large Canadian pavilion at the New York Times Travel Show. Positioned centrally, the Canadian pavilion received the "Most Interactive" award at the show that annually features over 500 exhibitors and welcomes over 25,000 visitors.  This Connecting America initiative provided a valuable opportunity to showcase Canada's unique range of products and experiences at the United States' largest consumer travel show. This mission was supported by Global Affairs Canada, through their Global Opportunities for Associations (GOA) program.

In February, TIAC and Destination Canada will also be presenting a Canadian pavilion at the the Boston Globe Travel Show

Canadian Council of Tourism Ministers
TIAC President & CEO Charlotte Bell Presenting to Canadian Council of Tourism Ministers
On Thursday, January 14th in Winnipeg, TIAC President & CEO Charlotte Bell will be presenting to the Canadian Council of Tourism Ministers on the state of the industry. This annual meeting is an exciting opportunity for TIAC to talk about issues facing our industry to government stakeholders at both the provincial and federal level. This year, Charlotte will present to the federal, provincial and territorial tourism ministers with a focus on the importance of a national effort in international marketing - and building upon the coast to coast to coast collaboration on the Connecting America initiative to expand our presence in other markets. In addition, she will take part in a Q&A on industry issues.

Destination Canada Announces
Co-operative Marketing Program
New Cooperative Marketing Program Under Connecting America
Earlier in the year, the federal government committed to invest $10 million per year for 3 years in the Connecting America marketing program to increase the number of leisure travellers to Canada from key American regions.
Destination Canada has designed a multi-facetted marketing program to maximize penetration into key US markets. A unique offering under Connecting America is the newly-announced co-operative marketing fund to co-invest in new initiatives that target specific sectors like skiing, angling, culinary, golf and festivals & events that will drive incremental business into Canada.

CanExport Announced
Government of Canada Unveils Program to Help SMEs with Export Opportunities

Through the new CanExport program, the Government of Canada has announced it will provide up to $50 million to help small and medium enterprises develop and seek global export opportunities over the next 5 years. The program was announced today by the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade and the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism.

TIAC is pleased to hear of this initiative, recognizing the positive effect it could have on tourism, Canada's third largest export sector. Despite a growing travel deficit, in 2013 tourism was responsible for more than $17.2 billion in export revenue. Entering 2016, our sector's need for competitive and stable long-term funding is greater than ever. CanExport will help tourism operators and businesses position Canada competitively in key markets such as China and the United States.

Overall Increase of International Visitors
Inbound Tourism Grows by 7%
Though the final numbers for 2015 visitation will not be complete until February, as of October 2015, Statistics Canada reports that Canada has experienced an overall increase in international visitors of 7.3%. This includes significant growth from the United States, and continued growth in China - two of our most important markets. We have also seen great numbers from Brazil and Mexico (partly due to the draw of the Pan Am games in July), South Korea, as well as steady visitation from our European markets. Hopefully with the implementation of Connecting America funding, strong industry advocacy, and the value of the Canadian dollar, tourism will stay the course for continued growth in 2016!

Beginning next month, TIAC will be sending out monthly updates about national tourism visitation numbers, including analysis on what this means for the industry. Stay tuned!
