A Note From TIAC's Past President & CEO

Over the past four years we have come a long way in growing the recognition of our industry as a key contributor to Canada's economic growth and established TIAC as an influential voice in shaping Canada's future prosperity. This could not have been done without the dedication of our active board members, past and present, and with the benefit of a team of dedicated professionals at TIAC with whom I have had the privilege to work with.

While I leave an exceptional team at TIAC who are committed to your service, I am excited by the opportunity to work with the gifted and dedicated team at the CTC to advance both the commercial interests of the sector and the federal government's desire to provide broader economic opportunity to the Canadian economy.

Rest assured that I will do my utmost to increase the already collaborative relationship between the CTC and TIAC, as I commit to you, my view that a stronger CTC relies on a stronger TIAC. As such I urge you to remain committed to TIAC through your membership and engagement.

I look forward to continuing to work with you to increase our industry's competitiveness and profitability.

Sincerely,

ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION DELAYED

eTA Program to Take Effect November 2015

In August of this year the federal government announced its intention to introduce new immigration regulations in April 2015 requiring all travellers to Canada from visa-waiver countries with (the exception of the United States) to obtain an electronic travel authorization (eTA) in order to board a Canada-bound aircraft.

TIAC has been supportive of the eTA initiative as it is designed to replace full visa requirements for travellers from lower-risk countries. However TIAC has stressed the need for proper program design, communication and implementation in order to minimize disruption to the industry's established business cycles.

TIAC and our industry partners lobbied the government to delay implementation of the eTA until the Fall of 2015 in order to allow adequate time to properly communicate the new requirements to key markets and to minimize disruption to the 2015 summer travel season.

In his keynote remarks to the TIAC Tourism Congress, Canada's Tourism Minister, Maxime Bernier, assured the assembled industry leadership that his government had heard TIAC's message and that the eTA program would not be enforced until November 2015.

Final regulations are expected to be published later in December and TIAC will provide industry with a fulsome explanation of the scope and potential impact of the new program.
CONNECTING AMERICA

Minister of State for Tourism Maxime Bernier Assures Tourism Congress Delegates the US is a Priority Market

The United states is Canada's largest and most important tourism source market as well as the top priority investment target for a nationally aligned leisure tourism marketing campaign.

TIAC has been leading the charge calling on the government to partner with industry in a dollar-for-dollar marketing co-investment into the United States. With the support of hundreds of letters from tourism businesses large and small.

Minister of State for Tourism Maxime Bernier assured delegates at the TIAC Tourism Congress that the United States is a priority market for his government and that he had recommended that the government invet in Connecting America.

While TIAC welcomes the Minister's endorsement we believe it is even more important for industry to not rest on our laurels and continue to assert pressure on our local Members of Parliament, cabinet ministers and the media.

Please write to your Member of Parliament and remind them of the importance of your business and the travel and tourism industry to the local and national economy. The Connecting America initiative will generate millions off dollars of new tourism spending while creating thousands of jobs; particularly for youth and provide taxpayers with a significant return on their investment through tax revenues.
