TRAVEL & TOURISM AT A GLANCE
Canada's Travel Statistics for April 2014
The following information is courtesy of the Canadian Tourism Commission's (CTC) Tourism Snapshot for April 2014 (Volume 10, Issue 4).

Following a slower first quarter Canada fared well in April 2014; perhaps due to a late Easter this year. A little over one million international travellers made it to Canada, a 12% increase over the previous year.

QUICK FACTS

  • Americans took to the skies and roads, up 8% and 13% respectively in April 2014.
  • However, year-to-date April 2014, the US market has dipped 1% to 2.3 million over-nighters.
  • The Mexico market bounced back, registering a 37% increase in travellers to Canada over the previous year.
  • The increases continued further south in Latin America, with the Brazil market seeing a 10% year-on-year rise.
  • In the CTC's Asian markets, there were strong increases in traveller numbers from the China (21%), South Korea (21%) and India (19%) over April 2013.
TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKERS PROGRAM (TFWP)
TIAC Wants to Hear From You!
Call For Employers' Experiences with Temporary Foreign Worker Program

The issue of temporary foreign workers and shortages of available labour have dominated the media this summer. TIAC and its industry partners are working with the government to find a workable solution to meet tourism's unique regional and seasonal labour needs.

Media reports and public discourse have been focused on a few isolated cases of abuse, what is missing is context. TIAC is looking for facts, stories, quotes and anecdotes that tell and articulate the reality faced by employers in our industry across Canada, and we want to hear from you.

If you would like to contribute, please provide us a short write-up discussing:

  • What job(s) you are filling with temporary foreign worker(s)?
  • Why are you unable to attract Canadian workers? (i.e. too remote, specialized skill, etc.)
  • What are you doing to support the temporary foreign worker(s) while they are here? (i.e. language classes, accommodations, perks, etc.)

Please submit your stories and experiences to Leanne Czerwinski at lczerwinski@tiac.travel. Thank you for your participation and stay tuned for our paper that launches this fall!

CAN+ PROGRAM TO FACILITATE TRADE AND TRAVEL WITH INDIA
Minister Alexander Launches CAN+ Program in India

This past May TIAC participated in the successful launch of the CAN+ visa facilitation program for Mexico. On July 7th Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander announced the expansion of CAN+ to include India. This will result in more efficient processing of Indian nationals coming to Canada.

CAN+ is available to Indian nationals who have travelled to Canada or the US within the last 10 years. Expedited processing, which will free up visa officers to work on other cases, will improve overall processing times for all Indian travellers.

QUICK FACTS
  • Indian nationals rank in the top 10 source countries of international visitors to Canada.
  • In 2013, more than 130,000 visitor visas were issued to Indian citizens, and nearly 14,000 Indian citizens were issued student permits.
  • A CAN+ pilot program in India delivered impressive results with visas issued within five days and an approval rate over 95 per cent.
  • Individuals eligible for CAN+ visa processing do not need to provide as many supporting documents when submitting their applications.
NEXUS PROGRAM SURPASSES ONE MILLIONTH MEMBER MILESTONE
More Travellers Realize Benefits of Membership

NEXUS, the bi-national program administered in collaboration with the US, has been growing in popularity since its inception, as more travellers realize the benefits of membership. Avoiding line-ups at primary inspection lanes at some of Canada's busiest airports and land ports of entry is the principal benefit of NEXUS membership.

Since the announcement of the Beyond the Border Action Plan in December 2011, new applications for NEXUS have increased from 2,500 to more than 4,500 per week.

This is great news as we continue to work with the Canadian government on the Connecting America initiative - a CTC-led campaign that will re-energize the US consumer, utilizing existing air and ground access.
