| TRAVEL & TOURISM AT A GLANCE |
| International Tourism Exceeds Expectations with Arrivals Up by 52 Million in 2013 |
|
International tourist arrivals grew by 5% in 2013, reaching a record 1.9 billion arrivals, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. World tourism generated $4.5 trillion in economic activity and $1.3 trillion in export revenue.
Canada's Performance on the World Stage
In 2013, Canada's tourism industry:
- Generated $84.3 billion in economic activity
- Was responsible for more than $18.2 billion in export revenue despite a growing travel deficit
- Generated $9.6 billion in federal government revenue
- Fostered 618,300 jobs across the country, spread across all 308 ridings
At 1.5% growth in Canada, the sector looks superficially healthy, but we are losing share of the international travel market. In 2013 we dropped to 17th place in international arrivals, in 2012 we were 16th and in 2002 we were 7th. Between 2002 and 2013, almost all countries posted international tourist arrivals gains - except Canada.

2014 TOURISM WEEK IN CANADA
|
|
Help TIAC Build a Gateway to Growth
|
|
What Is Tourism Week?
Tourism Week in Canada is a grassroots initiative that brings attention to the economic opportunity available to Canada through travel and tourism and the public policy challenges preventing the sector from capitalizing on those opportunities.
Tourism Week is not just about showcasing the economic impact and social benefits of Canada's tourism sector, but about issuing a call to action to decision-makers from across the country.
With your help, we can convey that:
- Public policy challenges are not only inhibiting growth within the travel and tourism sector itself, but squandering one of the great Canadian economic opportunities
- Smarter public policy would not just stimulate travel, but drive jobs and investment in the Canadian economy
What Can You Do?
This Tourism Week, communicate with decision-makers in your community to let them know about how public policy impacts your business.
Stage an event, hold a meeting, phone decision-makers, send emails or tweets, write an op-ed or a letter to the editor, or use the power of local media to let them know what issues matter to you.

CANADA'S NEW ANTI-SPAM LAW AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
|
| How to Obtain Express Consent and Other Questions |
 |

As of July 1st, 2014, any business or organization using e-mail, text messaging or social networks to promote products and services must adhere to Canada's new anti-spam law.
Here are some helpful tips from the Government of Canada's website:
- Determine if your electronic messages are commercial in nature as the law applies only to commercial electronic messages (CEMs). A CEM is defined as encouraging participation in a business transaction or activity, regardless of whether there is an expectation of profit.
- For all electronic messages you have determined to be commercial:
- Get the consent of your recipients, and keep records.
- Identify yourself and anyone you represent in the message. Provide contact information including your business name, postal address and either a telephone number or e-mail address.
- Include an 'unsubscribe button' or mechanism that allows the recipient to unsubscribe from receiving additional messages.
- Ensure that no part of the CEM is false or misleading, including the sender's identity, subject line, any web links, or any other material part of the message's text or data.
- Learn about the law at www.fightspam.gc.ca. The federal government has posted information about the law along with news, updates and valuable tips.
Every business owner, manager and employee is encouraged to examine the legislation to see how it will affect their marketing campaigns.
