Your Connection to Community Wellness
September 2015
Our appologies for the technical difficulties!  We are currently moving to a new
publication date.

What did you do on your summer vacation?!

Summer is a great opportunity to get outdoors and to connect with family and friends.  Did you know that getting outside provides physical benefits, such as aerobic, cardiovascular and muscular fitness, as well as an improved functioning
immune system?
The great outdoors provides social benefits like bonding with like-minded people who enjoy outdoor activities.  It contributes to an increased pride in your community too.  So how did you spend your summer?
Here is what some of our Community Wellness Team members have been up to:

 Back to School Breakfast Ideas

Welcome to the new school year! In the rush of preparing for a successful start, it is important to remember that having a healthy breakfast will lead the way to a great day. It has been proven that having a nutritious breakfast improves concentration and learning. A rule of thumb for planning a good breakfast is to include at least three of the
four food groups.

World Alzheimer's Month

The journey for families affected by dementia can pose many challenges. Knowing where to   find reliable information, support and available resources makes a big difference in helping families cope. September is World Alzheimer's Month, an international initiative to raise awareness about dementia and how families affected by this disease can find support.

World Rabies Day
When some people think of Rabies, they remember the Old Yeller movie scene where the faithful dog is penned up while the family waits to see if it becomes vicious andfoaming at the mouth. It does and the once loving dog has to be killed. Some people hear of Rabies and think of many scary needles, filled with large quantities of fluid being injected into the stomach. The facts about Rabies involves more than vicious pets and hospital
horror scenes.

Getting the facts are important in order to avoid spreading Rabies or false information.
World Suicide Prevention Day / Journe Mondiale de

Prvention du Suicide

Thursday, September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). This year's theme is "Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives." Since 2003, WSPD has taken place on the 10th of September each year. It serves as a call to action to individuals and organizations to prevent suicide. This year, the theme encourages us to consider the role that offering support may play in combating suicide.

The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP/ACPS) released a national video titled "Let's Talk about Suicide." This video is 15 minutes long and goes over some signs of someone who may need help, how to support someone who may be thinking of suicide, and provides information on some common misunderstandings about suicide.

This year, The Interlake-Eastern Suicide Prevention Committee is encouraging workplaces and organizations in our region to watch the video as part of their workplace health initiatives. We are also encouraging YOU to watch the "Let's Talk about Suicide" video on September 10th, or close to World Suicide Prevention Day.

The videos are available below in English and French.

How to encourage your kids to push (the right) boundaries
By: Katherine Janson for the
Participaction Blog "PepTalk"

Just as we have to let our kids ease into risky activities, according to their confidence and competence, we have to let ourselves, as parents, ease into some of the ideas of what we should and shouldn't let our kids do.  Risky play is never about letting your child play unsupervised at the pool, or ride a bike without a helmet.

Here is how the research defines the different categories of risky play.  Once you start to understand and identify the right types of risks, you might find yourself recognizing, allowing-and even encouraging-your child to test boundaries, explore and experiment with some risk.

Exercise of the Month:
SQUATS!
 Contributor:  Jan Keryluk,
Wellness Facilitator &
Certified Fitness Leader

Here is a great reason for including squats in your physical activity program:

"Strong legs are crucial for staying mobile as you get older, and squats are phenomenal for increasing leg strength. They also work out your core, stabilizing muscles, which will help you to maintain balance, while also improving the communication between your brain and your muscle groups, which helps
prevent falls."

Preserving Summer in
Your Kitchen

Chronic Disease Prevention

There has recently been an enthusiastic return to the age-old art of preserving food by canning at home. People are interested in home canning for a number of reasons.  Storing nutritious garden produce in a safe manner is one motivating factor, and so is finding satisfaction in being self-sufficient and giving one's creative side a chance to develop.
