ACORE Calls On TREIA To Facilitate Austin Briefing On National Security And Threat Of Climate Change

The American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) decided to include Austin in the itinerary for a series of briefings by Vice Admiral Lee Gunn (Ret.) they turned to TREIA for assistance. The TREIA office facilitated the effort which led to Austin Energy agreeing to host a breakfast meeting on March 25 to hear Admiral Gunn speak about the threat to national security posed by climate change. A select group of policymakers and industry leaders was invited to participate.  Click here to see who participated>

Gunn is a member of the Center for Naval Analysis (CNA) and is touring on behalf of CNA's Military Advisory Board. The group published a report in 2007, "National Security and the Threat of Climate Change," which brought attention to the issue.

TREIA thanks Jamie Mitchell, Austin Energy, for serving as liaison and Jeff Vice, Austin Energy for coordinating invitations and arrangements.

TREIA's Texas Energy Independence Week Puts Spotlight On Renewables

The TREIA tradition of declaring Texas Energy Independence Week (TEIW) in close proximity to Texas Independence Day (March 2) continued its successful run this March 4 - 6. Three intense days of events and activities informed state decision makers and others about the renewable energy industry, its capabilities, its benefits to the state, and TREIA's policy objectives for the 83rd Legislature. TREIA members were able to hear outstanding speakers offering business development information, make valuable business contacts, and communicate with legislators and their staffs about their companies, industry needs, and bills supported or opposed by TREIA.

TREIA 83rd Legislature Update - April 3, 2013

TREIA Activity Heating Up

The TREIA list of bills it is supporting or opposing currently numbers fifty-one. All the bills of interest to TREIA have been assigned to a committee for possible hearing. With less than two months remaining in this legislative session (the last day is May 27) things are really heating up in the committees, but only a handful of renewable energy bills have seen any action.

Former PUC Commissioner Rolando Pablos Says Solar A Focus In His New Job

Commissioner Rolando Pablos

Former Texas Public Utility Commissioner Rolando Pablos left his position on the Commission on March 1 and become CEO of the newly formed (Borderplex Binational Economic Alliance (Borderplex Alliance) on March 4. El Paso's Regional Economic Development Corp., (REDCo) has merged with the Paso del Norte Group to form the new organization.

Pablos recently addressed solar energy in an interview in El Paso, Inc., a weekly El Paso newspaper.

"Q: As a member of the Texas Public Utility Commission, you've become known as an advocate for solar power. Do you have a special interest in developing solar here in the Sun City?

I will take a special interest in renewable resources - the Borderplex is primed for that. If we can take advantage of our asset base like I'm talking about, which includes the sun, it's a win win. I would love to see the region become the solar hub of North America."

ERCOT Expects Another Tight Summer

Austin, TX (March 1, 2013)

The amount of electricity available to serve consumer demand will be tight again this summer, according to information released today by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the power grid and manages the electric market for most of the state.

"Current estimates indicate that we likely will see very tight conditions on the hottest days," said Kent Saathoff, vice president of Grid Operations and System Planning for ERCOT. "There is a significant chance that ERCOT will need to issue Energy Emergency Alerts and appeal to consumers to reduce their energy use on some of those days."

ERCOT issued two reports today: Click here to continue reading>
