Data & Technology Update

August 2012
Greetings!

We just got an update of the full voter file in VAN!  There are more details below, but one of the big advantages of the new file is having an up-to-date version to match with your membership or volunteer lists. Now is an ideal time to do a fresh match so you can see who's registered, who might not be, and which of your members might need extra civic engagement attention going into the fall.

Nate and I will be happy to help you get a fresh list match done, so please get in contact soon!

As always, if you have any questions or would like any assistance with lists, VAN, or anything related please don't hesitate to contact me by email or phone (503-239-8029).

2012 General Election Turnout Scores

As for past elections, a turnout model is available on VAN for the upcoming November election.  The model scores all registered voters on their likelihood of casting a ballot in November.  Those with high turnout scores are more likely to vote than those with lower scores.

The scores allow us to be smarter and more efficient in how we target our civic engagement communications.  For issue education and persuasion around ballot measures, targeting the highest-scoring voters ensures you're spending your resources talking to those people most likely to cast a ballot.  For GOTV the middle score range should be targeted, making sure those people "on the cusp" of voting are given the push they may need to get their ballot in, while not wasting energy talking to those almost certain to vote anyway or those unlikely to vote no matter what.

Questions about using the turnout scores, or need help using them to get the right lists out of VAN?  Please get in contact with Nate or myself!

Sincerely,

Seth Purdy
