Sacred Mountains of the Bay Area:
Inhabiting Home through Science and Spirit
Fourth Annual Earth Medicine Alliance Conference
Sat-Sun, Oct. 26-27, 2013
San Francisco
Living in earth-honoring ways calls for an integrated approach to ecology, human culture, and relationship with the Sacred. If you live in the Bay Area, chances are you (like eight million others) live between the waters of the Estuary and a ring of mountains: Mt Tamalpais and Mt St Helena in the North, Mt Diablo in the East, Mt Hamilton and Mt Umunhum in the South Bay, and San Bruno Mountain just south of San Francisco. How can relating in conscious ways with these mountains increase your sense of home and place and also nourish your human relationships and inner life? On Sat, Oct 26th (Day One) over 15 distinguished presenters will guide our approach to the mountains from five disciplines: * Natural science (including local geology, flora, and fauna) * Indigenous Bay Area cultures past, present, and future * Storytelling and creative expression * Public policy and advocacy (inc. local sacred sites) * Spiritual practice focused on relating with mountains. On Day Two you'll have the opportunity to participate in smaller breakout rituals and other guided teachings on several of the local mountains. Cost for both days is $65 before Sept 22nd and $75 in the month or so before the conference. To register please visit: sacredmountains.brownpapertickets.com. Stay tuned for details on presenters. We hope you can join us!

Featured Presenter:
Stephen Altschuler
Described by one reviewer as "a spiritual Thoreau" author Stephen Altschuler shares with Earth Medicine Alliance his personal journeys and revelations from long solo immersions in nature, which he recounts in his books Sacred Paths and Muddy Places as well as The Mindful Hiker. His aim is to heighten consciousness among human beings by directing us to the sometimes mundane things that unite us and make us feel connected to each other. That way, we might better care for one another as well as the planet as a whole. He is primarily a hiker who sees great value in communing with the earth through his feet. We are delighted to welcome Stephen as one of 15 featured presenters at the October 26-27 conference Sacred Mountains of the Bay Area. "Stephen discovered his own spiritual path through an insightful relationship with nature. Stephen's goal is to remind us of an old adage-what you love, you will care for. If you spend time in natural places and those places have meaning for you, not only will you care for them, but also you will care for all of nature." -Shirley MacLaine, introducing Stephen before interviewing him on her IE radio program

Featured Presenter:
Ginny Anderson
As a PhD eco-psychologist and explorer, Ginny Anderson's travels have taken her to sacred sites world-wide. Traveling the mountains of the Andes in the company of the Peruvian shaman Americo Yabar, again and again she heard his joyful and passionate expression of pleasure in his homeland: "This is paradise! These mountains are so beautiful!" She agreed -- and at the same time, the paradise of her California home nudged her for its own recognition. When she returned to California, she immediately turned her attention to writing her new book: Circling San Francisco Bay: A Pilgrimage to Wild and Sacred PlacesGinny lights the way for us to forge a deeper link between themselves and the natural world, as she explores the meaning and connections between sacred place, personal space, open hearts, and intent. As she describes her pilgrimage in the mountains that surround San Francisco Bay, she invites us to embark on our own pilgrimage. We are delighted to welcome Ginny as one of 15 featured presenters at the October 26-27 conference Sacred Mountains of the Bay Area.

Ways to Support and Get Involved
The Earth Medicine Alliance is a 501(c)3 non-profit in state of California. We encourage approaches to education and culture change that harmonize traditional indigenous ways of life with modern Western science and culture. One of the best ways you can support our work is by making a donation to support our efforts (we are fully tax-exempt).
Dedicated volunteers are needed year-round for various projects:
- Voices of the Earth Project. Work on an interview/film project in a flexible team environment and interface with great earth-honoring elders and community leaders. Contact: elaine@earthmedicine.org
- Board of Directors. We are a working board of seven with space for a few others. If you have experience serving on a board, and especially if you have fundraising, marketing, business, or other practical skills, feel good about contacting us: info@earthmedicine.org
- Staff and Volunteers. Our six staff members work together to carry out all aspects of our programming (inc. conferences and the Voices project). If you have skills related to non-profit service or just the time and enthusiasm to dedicate, please be in contact. We're also open to inquiries about the executive director role: info@earthmedicine.org
