This week, our DKJA community continued to experience moments in life that leave an impact like no other. Our first-graders received their first Siddurim today in a moving assembly, joined by family and loved ones. This event is a truly unique, memorable step on the Jewish journey for our youngest learners. It is one of many to come, and is a building block of their Jewish education. The significance of moments such as this, and how generations share these cherished moments, came to life when student Reuben Sigel and his mother, Sarina, proudly displayed their Siddurim following the assembly.
Sarina brought the one she received as a child, and as you can see by the photo here, continues to be just as proud as her son, who received his today! L'Dor VaDor...from Generation to Generation. There is nothing more important!
Our eighth-graders and 12th graders, respectively, returned from their journeys to Eretz Yisrael (as well as the March of the Living for 12th graders). On our campus last week, the revelry of Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) was joyous, and during the celebrations, our thoughts were constantly thousands of miles away as we lived vicariously through our traveling students. Their trips were the culmination of seeing firsthand what they had learned in their classrooms and in experiential programming. This trip was everything they had learned "brought to life." Israel is renowned for its Technion Israel Institute of Technology, and countless advancements that have impacted the world at large...not to mention delicious food, a beautiful landscape and cultural traditions that permeate our lives at DKJA.
From technological marvels to hand-made pita bread (enough for the entire Middle School!) and so much more, DKJA truly became a "virtual Israel" thanks to the dedicated team of general and Hebrew/Judaic Studies teachers in the Middle School. Mrs. Holley Stabler worked tirelessly to organize a breathtaking technology showcase, and to ensure that festive blue shirts were prepared in advance of Yom Ha'Atzmaut in celebration of Israel's 68th birthday.
Morah Miriam Engel, Morah Sharon Shoshan and Morah Tiki Magril, and their families, comprised a dynamic team of bakers, entertainers and booth organizers. Activities started in Zinman Hall and the MAC after a festive tefilah began the day, led by Mr. Nachshon Carmi.
When the students who experienced this opportunity are able to travel to Israel in a few short years, they will already feel at home!
The day was magnificent and brought the DKJA education full circle as we welcomed our students home, safe and sound this week. What a great week it was!
