ELECTED OFFICIALS DISCUSS HOW TO GROW LOCAL BUSINESS
|
Since 2010, city, county and state elected officials from across the Upstate region have been convening on a regular basis to discuss issues that impact communities across the region. The latest session, held at the Michelin North American Headquarters in May, was focused on how communities can grow their own local businesses and economy. It included a presentation by David Shellhorse, Economic Development Manager for the Appalachian Council of Governments, on the Entrepreneurial Friendly Tool Kit, which is an online tool and community process developed to help communities identify the entrepreneurial support tools available in their community and then enhance how they can assist small businesses and entrepreneurs. Here is a direct link to the Tool Kit. John Lummus, CEO of the Upstate SC Alliance, then moderated a panel that looked at various ways communities across the Upstate have developed support programs to grow their small business and entrepreneurial community. Panelists included Glenn Breed, Economic Development Director for the City of Anderson, Dave Eldridge, CEO of the Tri-County Entrepreneurial Development Corporation, The Honorable Mike Forrester, Director of Economic Development for Spartanburg Community College and John Moore, CEO of Next. The next Upstate Elected Officials Meeting will take place in the fall and focus on land use in the Upstate and the Shaping Our Future Scenario Planning Project that is currently underway.

UPSTATE ALTERNATIVE CAPITAL PROVIDERS NETWORK
|
On June 2nd, a group of alternative capital providers gathered to network and listen to a presentation by Joseph McMillin, CEO of Atlas Organics. Atlas organics is a company devoted to diverting food waste from landfills. In fact, to date in 2016 they have already recycled over 1.4 million pounds of food waste. During his presentation, Joseph outlined how he was able to combine several different funding types to start his business.
Atlas Organics started in the business incubator at Wofford College called The Space. While at the incubator Joseph participated in a business plan competition which he won, securing $5,000 to start his business. Being straight out of college and unable to take out a loan, Joseph and his business partner borrowed from family and friends and maxed out credit cards to supplement the $5,000 prize money and start their business.
With the help of Michelin Development, Joseph was able to clarify his business and expansion plan. He was then at a point where he could pitch to investors within the South Carolina Angel Network (SCAN). During his presentation Joseph emphasized how essential the support of Michelin Development and SCAN were in getting his business to the point it is at today.
The Upstate Alternative Capital Providers will be meeting again in Fall 2016.
