REGISTER TODAY FOR THE FIRST
TEN AT THE TOP VISION FORUM OF 2014

Ten at the Top will focus the first Our Upstate Vision Forum of 2014 on the topic of Cultivating a Knowledge Based Culture in the Upstate. The forum, which is free and open to the public, is being held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 in the AT&T Auditorium at CU-ICAR (4 Research Drive Greenville, SC 20607). A networking reception will immediately follow the forum.

The featured speaker will be Lynn Scott Safrit. Ms. Safrit serves as President of Castle and Cooke North Carolina and oversees the development of the North Carolina Research Campus as well as other real estate development opportunities in North Carolina. The North Carolina Research Campus is a research community of 300 scientists and support staff focused on treating and preventing the most prevalent diseases of our times including cancer, diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer's disease. Researchers find connections and support by participating in associations like Catalyst, Faculty Staff, the Administrative Forum and the Cabarrus Chinese American Association. Ms. Safrit will discuss how the NC Research Campus has successfully created a knowledge based culture in a traditional mill community.

There will also be a group discussion, led by Dr. Tom Moore, Chancellor of USC Upstate, where the audience and subject experts will discuss some of the current initiatives in the Upstate and what can continue to be done to grow this culture.

The Our Upstate Vision Forum Series began in 2012 with TATT hosting forums across the Upstate on issues of regional significance. The series continues in 2014 with BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina serving as the Series Premier Sponsor.

The forum is free and open to the public, but advance registration is requested. Please RSVP here.

SAVE THE DATE: TEN AT THE TOP HOSTING 2014 UPSTATE REGIONAL SUMMIT "RE-CHECKING OUR REALITY" ON SEPTEMBER 16TH

Be sure and mark your calendar for the Upstate Regional Summit: Re-Checking our reality, which will be held on September 16, 2014 at the TD Convention Center. The event will run from 9:00 am-1:30 pm and include morning workshops and a luncheon.

It has been five years since the Upstate Reality Check event asked Upstate residents for their opinions and insight around projected growth. Over the last five years, much has been done across the Upstate with the intention of ensuring the Upstate is growing (both from a physical and social infrastructure standpoint) in a manner that will help the region reach its full potential and remain a great place to live, learn, do business and raise a family for generations to come.

The September Summit will look at some of the challenges and successes faced by the Upstate over the last five years and then gather input and insight from participants on what priorities need to be addressed over the next five years as we continue working collectively to ensure future success across the Upstate.

More details, including keynote speakers, the full program and registration information will be announced in the coming months, but please be sure and block the date on your calendar today.

TEN AT THE TOP TASK FORCE UPDATE

Ten at the Top's five task forces have each completed their initial meetings of 2014. The Community Vibrancy task force, co-chaired by R.P. Rama (JHM Hotels) and Torance Inman (Union County Chamber of Commerce), has begun work on a community event template initiative meant to enable smaller Upstate communities to easily plan and execute events and projects such as festivals and community parks.

The Economic & Entrepreneurial Task Force, co-chaired by Erin Ouzts (USC Upstate), Jonathan Coleman (Laurens County Development Corporation), and Jim Price (Nexsen Pruet), is focusing on supporting the Appalachian Council of Government's "Entrepreneurial-Friendly Community" designation program and on collecting and publicizing funding resources for smaller and start-up companies.

The Natural Beauty & Resources Task Force, co-chaired by Jill Miller (SC Rural Water Association) and Ty Houck (Greenville County Recreation District), is exploring the possibility of cooperation among regional parks and trails groups in applying for grants, as well as improving the natural resources section of the Upstate Information Hub website (www.ourupstatesc.info).

The Sustainable Growth Task Force, co-chaired by Stephanie Tillerson (City of Woodruff) and Phil Lindler (Greenwood County), is working with the Upstate Professional Planners group on a regional comprehensive plan mapping project and on supporting efforts led by Scott Park (Greenville County Planning) to develop a regional food system strategic plan.

Finally, our Human Potential Task Force, co-chaired by Karen Burgess (Brown Mackie College Greenville) and Paul Corbeil (Oconee County Council), is examining what barriers to success exist for various age groups and how existing resources might meet these needs.

If you are interested in participating in a Ten at the Top task force, contact Kirbie Crowe, Program Manager, at (864) 283-2313.
