Three long-time members of Amigos Bravos are hosting an information session on Legacy Giving this Friday evening, March 21st, at 5pm, in Taos. Anyone who is interested in knowing more about how to leave a gift of any amount to Amigos Bravos, in their will or estate plan, is welcome to attend. There will be no pressure to sign on -- this is strictly an information session set up by three people who have been through the process and would like to make that option easier to understand for others. Bring your curiosity! For more information,  call Brian Shields at 575-758-3874.

INSPIRED BY BEAUTIFUL MIDDEN

Students from Vista Grande High School, in Taos, will present poems and artwork inspired by the Amigos Bravos Beautiful Midden project and student learning about the effect of trash and toxins on the local environment. A presentation by the students to County Commissioner, Gabe Romero, will be made on Tuesday, March 18, at 9am. AMIGOS BRAVOS MARCH "WATER MATTERS" LECTURE: ARTIST LEE LEE

PLASTIC OCEAN: AN INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION

On the evening of Tuesday, March 18, at 5:30pm, at the Santa Fe Community Foundation, the Amigos Bravos "Water Matters" lecture will feature visual artist, Lee Lee, making a presentation on "Plastic Ocean: An Interactive Installation." The "Water Matters" Lectures are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 5:30pm, are free to our members and the public, and feature some of the most knowledgeable and dynamic speakers in the region, including writers, scientists, poets, environmental activists, and scholars.
Visual Artist, Lee Lee
Lee Lee attained her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and has since spent time making art and exhibiting in over 40 countries. These experiences have led her to develop a wide range of painting styles in response to the diverse conditions of our world. Her work is informed by several movements through art history, from the feminist expressionist drawings of Kathe Kollwitz to the actions of the 1970s, which embraced processes using shotgun or fire. Strong environmental themes have entered into Lee Lee's repertoire in recognition that social and political stress is driven by scarcity of resources.
Lee Lee will speak on Tuesday about "Plastic Ocean," an interactive installation, which is being created as a response to the problems presented by single-use plastic. The work reflects the literal problem of plastic in the ocean, while offering a symbolic representation of the chemical body burdens carried by wildlife and humans alike. In presenting these issues, we are asked to consider misplaced notions of "disposability" and to question consumer driven waste, which has devalued what, Lee Lees explains, "is in fact a very important material." This presentation will cover the ecological and health issues surrounding single-use plastics, drawing connections from the ocean through inland waterways and up into our high desert ecologies, in order to demonstrate how New Mexico communities are tied to the issue. It will also serve as an introduction to the international arts collaboration currently unfolding in regard to plastic.
The lecture will open with a short reading from "Elegy for the BabyAlbatross of MidwayAtoll, " a collage poem assembled and performed by Sawnie Morris, winner of the Poetry Society of America's George Bogin Memorial Award (2010) and co-winner of the New Mexico Book Award (2007).
Morris was the founding executive director of Amigos Bravos and is currently Curator of Art & Activism for the organization.
Poet, Sawnie Morris
