February's meeting: Ask the Guide

 

This month's meeting we welcome muskie guide Josh Brovosky. Josh has been featured in multiple media outlets such as MN Bound, Lindner's Angling Edge, Cabela's We Live Outdoors and The Next Bite. He also fishes the PMTT and has earned the 2010 Top Gun - Team of the Year Championship.  

 

Josh will be changing things up from the normal seminar. At the beginning of the night you will be asked to write down any and all questions that you would like to know from a professional muskie angler. It doesn't matter if the question is about technique, a certain scenario, lure presentation, how to's, establishing patterns, equipment, lunar tables, etc. Any question you'd like to know about muskie fishing. During our normal business session, Josh will then go through all the questions and form a seminar based on what "YOU" want to know. Josh also guides on Lake Vermilion so he will touch on a few things up on Vermilion as he knows the Gil Hamm will be held there this year.

2013 Gil Hamm Location Selected

 

The Chicagoland Muskie Hunters have made their choice for the 2013 Gil Hamm. They have chosen Lake Vermilion. September 14th - 21st with the tourney being held the 18th - 20th. The host resort is Spring Bay Resort on the west end. Three resorts besides Spring Bay have offered up special Gil Hamm rates for mid week or weekly stays. We have combined our annual Lure Swap with the Poolside Demo!

The Lure/Tackle Swap will take place of our regular monthly meeting for March. The swap is going to be set up as a mini lure/tackle show featuring new and used lures and tackle. It will be heavily promoted and available to the general public. There are 25 tables available for rent for the show. The rate is $20/table for non members or $15/table for BLC members. We are allowing up to 2 people per table to split the cost. At least one of the 2 people renting a table has to be a BLC member to receive member discount. Each table will be set up to have an area equivalent to a trade show 10'x10' booth.

It doesn't matter what lures or tackle you have. Bass, walleye, pike or muskie lures. Fishing equipment and electronics more than welcomed. If it's for fishing and you'd like to sell or trade it... BRING IT!

As for the Poolside Demo session of the Show, Musky Tackle Online has once again offered to supply the lures for the demo. Only thing that MTO needs is your input on what you would like to see presented. Contact Aaron or Jeff to submit your lure requests.

We have several new and used vendors committed already but we still have plenty of room for much more!

Hugh Becker Grants

The Becker Grants that the BLC has submitted are a go. The Baby/Man genetics and Mississippi River PIT tag studies are on track for 2013. Another proposal that has been recently laid on the table is a proposed DNR land purchase on Roosevelt Lake to preserve fish habitat. The BLC has committed $500 in assisting with the acquisition.

BLC Youth Event Revamped

Another revamping of your regular schedule this year is our annual Youth Night. Our Youth event has been moved from our normal monthly meeting to a Saturday. August 24th is the date. It will be held at Camp Vanasek on the shores of Whipple Lake in Baxter. Camp Vanasek is nestled on 80 acres with multiple buildings, cabins and a pavilion. Having our youth event held at the Camp and on a Saturday offers the BLC the opportunity to host an even better event with more activities. Stay tuned for further details.

BLC Summer Camp Coming for 2014

In addition to the Youth event changes, our Youth Director, Jadyn Young, has been in talks with Camp Vanasek in adding a BLC Youth Summer Camp for 2014. Tentative details would include a 3 day weekend camp for kids for come, enjoy and learn about the great outdoors. Multiple structured activities are in the works including arts and crafts, lure making, seminars, fishing, hiking, etc. Stay tuned for further confirmed details coming this fall.
