Nicholas B. Dirks, a scholar in anthropology and history,  dean of the Arts and Sciences faculty and a senior leader at Columbia University, has been tapped to serve as UC Berkeley's 10th chancellor. 

UC President Mark Yudof made the announcement today. Dirks would take over on June 1, 2013, if his selection is approved by the Board of Regents later this month.
