In the wake of the deadly Oso mudslide two main questions seem to be circulating: Will this happen again and how can I help the people in need?
Unlike the warning systems and maps that help residents and officials prepare for natural disasters, such as floods and hurricanes, there's no national system to monitor slide activity and no effort underway to produce detailed nationwide landslide hazard maps. It is left to states to compile. Here in Washington, the state Department of Ecology has stability maps that shed light on coastal slopes around Western Washington. The cliffs along Magnolia Blvd, inside Discovery Park, areas of West Seattle and Vashon are considered unstable "because of geology, groundwater, slope and/or erosional factors." See if your area is of concern by clicking here.
Relief is needed for those hit by the mudslide.
