CHAMBER CONNECTION: Week of April 8, 2013
Greetings from Pulaski County
Chamber of Commerce

Dear Member:

Good day! I hope by the time you read this the snow has stopped and the weather is truly something you would expect to see in spring! It better be because we have a business after hours this week at Calfee Park sponsored by NRCC! The plans are to mix and mingle and watch a little baseball if the weather cooperates. Makes you think about summer activities, doesn't it?

Speaking of summer, the Chamber will be running the farmers market for the Town of Pulaski this year and we have some awesome things planned for you! It will be called THE MARKETPLACE and will take place every Tuesday at the historic train station in the Town from 4 -  8 p.m. You may be thinking "what does the Chamber have to do with a farmers market?" Let me tell you -- a farmers market has vendors and those vendors are all micro businesses. You don't have to have four walls to call yourself a business. Agriculture is big business in Virginia, the #1 industry! So we not only help micro businesses, we encourage buying local.  Foot-traffic increases, creating more potential customers in the Town and the top benefit is that the food is local and fresh which equals healthier consumers! ! WOW!

Have a great week, work hard, be productive and above all else stay positive.

"What is This Thing Called 'Sequestration'?"

Practically every time we access the media, something is mentioned about "sequestration." Usually it is complaining about cuts in some area of government spending in which the writer or speaker has a particular interest.

I would not disagree that there are probably many spending cuts that legitimately need to be made in many areas of government (and businesses and households, too, for that matter). What the current sequester actually means is that for domestic discretionary spending (the things that help ordinary people and communities and law enforcement) there will be approximately a 9 percent across-the-board cut. The approach being taking is sometimes referred to as the "meat-ax" approach. There is no stipulation which allows a decision to be made between cutting attendance at conferences or research funds into cancer at the National Institutes of Health. Everything is going to be cut across the board. There will be about a 13 percent across-the-board cut in military spending. Read more

CIVIL WAR DINNER AT ROCKWOOD MANOR

The New River Historical Society/Wilderness Road Regional Museum and the New River Valley Fine Arts Center are sponsoring a CIVIL WAR DINNER at Rockwood Manor in Dublin on Saturday, April 27

th. Doors open for guests at 5:30 p.m., seated dinner begins at 6 p.m. The special guests for the dinner will be author Sharyn McCrumb and her husband David. Sharyn will be in character for the dinner, perhaps based on her book Ghost Riders. After dinner her presentation and book signing will be in the new Rockwood Pavilion. Costumes are optional for guests.

Tickets may be purchased at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum or the Fine Arts Center.

Ticket price for the dinner, Sharyn McCrumb presentation, and book signing are $50 per person. A limited number of tickets are available at the dinner table with Sharyn for $75 each.

Re-enactors will be camped on the lawns and pastures of Rockwood for the weekend and will be guarding the house to ensure the safety of the guests but it is thought by many that the appearance of the iron beasts on wheels carrying people into the grounds will strongly discourage any possible hostilities. It is rumored that a musician may be wandering around.

The HistoryMobile will also be at Rockwood for the weekend. The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile is an interactive "museum on wheels" housed in a 53' expandable tractor trailer. It is on a four-year tour launched on July 21, 2011 in conjunction with the 150 th anniversary commemoration of the First Battle of Manassas. It draws together stories from all over Virginia and uses state-of-the-art technology and immersive exhibit spaces to present stories of the Civil War from the perspective of those who experience it - young and old, enslaved and free, soldiers and civilians.
