CHAMBER CONNECTION: Week of December 17, 2012
|
Greetings from Pulaski County
Chamber of Commerce
Dear Member: The countdown to Christmas has officially begun! Sales forecaster's predicted a 4.1% increase over last year, but the effects of Sandy could dampen that forecast. So much emphasis is put on Holiday sales, typically because those sales make up 25% to 30% of a business's total year in sales. If you are in that category and your sales fell short of what you anticipated thus far, please note that there is a fallacy about the busiest shopping day of the year. It is actually the Saturday before Christmas and not the Friday after Thanksgiving known as "Black Friday". Something to keep in mind as we move through the holiday season. How is this season working out with what you forecasted in sales? What could you have done differently and what will you do next year to give yourself an even better year? There are a lot of opportunities out there for your business and considering that the average consumer spends $1000, that's a lot of opportunity! You need to figure out how you can capture some of that. Make your plans NOW for 2013. There are still several more opportunities waiting for you with Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter, Father's Day, and Halloween! Have a great week work hard, be productive and keep a positive attitude! Peggy White 540.674.1991

Chamber Spotlight by Sheila D. Nelson
"Should We Assume That Everyone is Merry at Christmas?"
I appreciate the fact that the Christmas season should be a time of great joy and celebration. For Christians, it is the time to celebrate the greatest gift of all, when God sent his only Son to be a sacrifice for the sins of those who would accept that gift. However, some of the biggest celebrators of the season appear to never give a thought to the real meaning of the season, instead worshiping at the feet of the retail god to see who can spend the most money and the party god to see who can throw the most elaborate celebrations. There is nothing wrong with gift-giving and partying as long as the reason for the celebration is not overshadowed or totally forgotten.

....to Will Hale and Dr. Eric Steen, which have been appointed to three-years terms on LewisGale Hospital - Pulaski's Board of Trustees (they replace John Gill and Dr. Ajay Acharya);
.... to Draper Mercantile, which hosted our last Business After Hours for 2012, at a well-attended and delightful event;
....to everyone who made the Town of Dublin Christmas parade such a nice holiday event; and,
....to Director Jeff McCoy and the Pulaski County High School Little Theatre Department for the following recent accomplishments: won 1st place at District One Act on November 3rd at PCHS; 2nd place at Regional One Act on November 17th at Magna Vista HS, and represented PCHS at the State One Act competition on December 3 in Charlottesville. Although they didn't place at State, they were fabulous in their performance of "Ellis Island, Through the Golden Door" which was written by Jeff McCoy and two others.

Thought of the Week
"The Dime"
Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his back yard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots; he didn't like them and anyway he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out of the cold. Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. And try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, "This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money to spend."
