Worship Sunday November 15
Commitment Sunday
|
This Sunday is Commitment Sunday. During worship, you will be invited to make your financial commitment for 2016 by turning in your commitment card. If you can't join us in worship, you can mail in your card or make your commitment online at CovenantWeb.org/give. Your gifts to the Church of the Covenant matter. Thank you
for all the ways you give!
In worship we will hear the story of Hannah, a deeply personal story of taking desperation and longing to God. How does Hannah's story inform our story and our willingness to bring our deepest pain and hope to God? Our passages are Hebrews 10:32-39 and1 Samuel 1:4-20. The Lay Worship Leader is Ed Pembroke. Sunday's bulletin is generally at CovenantWeb.org on Fridays.
When the children leave for Sunday school following the time for Young Disciples, they will begin their study of the stories of Advent, beginning with Mary's story.
The Crche for infants and children through pre-kindergarten age is open from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Talk with Mindy Stewart about opportunities for youth and families and Kaori Hongo about children's choir.

Our music for this week features poetry and music from both contemporary America and the English renaissance. The introit is an arrangement of the familiar hymn, "Take My Life and Let It Be," and reminds us of the act of self-consecration. The anthem, "Valediction" (meaning farewell), is by the contemporary American composer David Conte (b.1955). Its stirring text is by the English poet, scholar, and soldier Philip Sidney (1554-1586). The offertory, by the English renaissance composer Christopher Tye (1505-1572), focuses on the spiritual benefits of giving one's resources (or "almes"). The prelude to the service, David Conte's Soliloquy, was dedicated to Chick Holtkamp and premiered at the Cleveland Museum of Art's Gartner Auditorium on September 28, 1996. The postlude, Loth to Depart is by another English renaissance composer, Giles Farnaby (c.1563-1640), and comes from a collection of "virginal music" entitled The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.

We keep in our prayers Akeya Clark (Marie Jones's niece), Dan Clint, Jan Dean, Lise Genson (Loren Genson's mother), Hal Gober, Mia James, Doris Klein (Will Klein's mother), Marilyn and Rolf Krotseng, Ed Pembroke, Jonyrma Singleton, and Frank Svoboda. We also pray for Covenant members and friends who are struggling with illness, convalescing, or are homebound; the patients, family, and staff in our surrounding hospitals; those who have placed prayer requests in our Carpenter's Box; and all who are impacted by gun violence.
Bear one another's burdens,
and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Covenant welcomes new members
|
Covenant welcomes new members Sergey Ostrovskiy, Peggy Kacerek, Jim Pennza, Stephanie Skrout, and Dale Goode (not pictured).
Sergey Ostrovskiy is a social work graduate student at CWRU's Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, having completed his undergraduate degree at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. He recently completed a social work internship at the Toledo Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in Toledo. Sergey and his family moved to Cincinnati in 2002 from the Ukraine. Sergey, a trained Stephen Minister, has already joined Covenant's team of Stephen Ministers.
Peggy Kacerek shares that her first fifty years were spent in Presbyterian churches in New Jersey, and then seventeen years in Maine. She moved to the Cleveland area ten years ago to be closer to her daughter and her family. She "loves participating in the peace and justice movement, and is looking forward to being a part of Covenant!"
Stephanie Skrout, a Child Life Worker at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, lives in Willoughby and grew up in Euclid. She is engaged to Jim Pennza; they are planning to be married in July, 2016. She enjoys crazy adventures like skydiving and edge walking off the CN Tower in Toronto. As a past youth minister, she really enjoys working with children. Stephanie says she is "so excited and blessed to be a new member to the Church of the Covenant!"
Jim Pennza currently lives in Grand River, but grew up outside of Middlefield. He is engaged to Stephanie Skrout; they are planning a July wedding. Jim works for a telecommunications company in Mentor, and also started a fish farm. He is an avid sportsman and enjoys being outdoors. Jim says that he "feels so lucky to have found the Church of the Covenant and that he has had such a warm welcome becoming a member."
Dale Goode is a lifelong Cleveland resident and an artist whose work has shown widely throughout Northeast Ohio. He is a painter, muralist, sculptor, photographer, and videographer. Dale was once commissioned to paint a mural titled "Apostles of Peace," with the faces of John and Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Jimmy Carter. He is happy to be part of the Covenant family.
We also welcome Melanie Emig who wished to make a formal commitment to Covenant as a participant during her time in Cleveland. Melanie originally hails from Chambersburg, PA and relocated to Cleveland in 2012. She graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2010, where she studied both Vocal Performance and Opera Theater. Currently, she works for Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, where she assists with box office operations. She also maintains a Suzuki piano studio at The Music Settlement in University Circle. In her free time, Melanie likes to read, embroider, sing, and practice piano. She is thankful for the warmth and kindness she has experienced at Covenant and is happy to join such a welcoming congregation.

Thank you to the Rev. Dr. Catherine Borchert |
In early 2013 we welcomed the Reverend Catherine (Kitty) Glennan Borchert to Covenant as a Parish Associate. Kitty is a retired minister, with her membership in the Presbytery of the Western Reserve, but she has been part of our Covenant family for the past two years. She has now completed her time with us in the "official" role as Parish Associate.
Reverend Borchert walked with us through our time of transition, providing counsel, wisdom, and support based on her years of experience. She has served all levels within the Presbyterian Church, beginning at Fairmount Presbyterian Church where she was a member for 40 years through the Presbytery of the Western Reserve, Synod, and General Assembly. We are so grateful to Kitty for sharing her wisdom and comfort with us these last two years!
