The Church of the Covenant

Worship of God
Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

10 AM
September 14, 2014

The Rev. Amy Starr Redwine's sermon is entitled As We Forgive.  The scripture lessons are  Psalm 103:8-13 and Matthew 18:21-35.

In answer to Peter's question of how many times we should forgive someone who repeatedly offends us, Jesus essentially says, "Over and over and over again." What Jesus doesn't specify is how we do this. What has been your experience of forgiveness? Are you more comfortable forgiving or being forgiven? What have been the consequences for you when you have not forgiven someone who hurt you?                                        Amy

The Lay Worship Leader is Carol Roe.

Each Sunday one of our Stephen Ministers remains in Christ Chapel following worship to speak with anyone who would like a listening ear or a prayer.

Midweek Music & Meditation, Wednesdays, 4:30-5 pm,  is offered for anyone who would find comfort in a time of reflection, music, and prayer. Prayer requests placed in The Carpenter's Box on the Christ Chapel table are included in each Midweek Music and Meditation time of prayer.
One World Festival

Inspired by the beauty and potential of Rockefeller Park and the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, IngenuityFest creator and Cleveland Public Theatre founder James Levin is launching Cleveland One World Festival to bring people back to the Gardens. Cleveland One World Festival will expand upon the Cleveland Cultural Gardens' "One World Day," a celebration held in the gardens for the past 66 years. This year Cleveland One World Festival event will  take place on September 13 & 14, and will offer a cultural smorgasbord in celebration of Cleveland's incredible cultural diversity. This FREE event will feature authentic, ethnic food, drink, and musical, theatrical, and artistic entertainment will showcase the best of what Cleveland's cultural communities have to offer.

BE ADVISED:   MUCH OF MLK BLVD WILL BE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND
Music Notes

Sunday's music reflects on the mercy of God. The Kyrie eleison (the first part of the Mass Ordinary) is one of the oldest prayers for mercy in the Christian tradition. Its Greek words have been put to countless musical settings from ancient Gregorian chant to 20th century jazz. The choir sings a setting of the text written in 1947 by the French composer Maurice Durufl as part of his most popular work, the style="font-size: 10pt;">Requiem, Op. 9. Durufl employs the use of the original Gregorian melody, which is woven into a fabric of lush harmony and soaring melody. The organ prelude features another work of Durufl, the Sicilienne from his Suite, Op. 5. The sicilienne was originally a slow, lilting Italian dance in 6/8 or 12/8. The offertory features an alternate setting of the hymn text "There's a wideness in God's mercy" by the American composer Calvin Hampton (1938-1984). The service concludes with a setting of the Kyrie for organ from Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental Clavierbung III (1736). Like Durufl, Bach quotes the Gregorian chant in long tones in the pedal, ornamented by contrapuntal melodies played by the hands.

Students Community

Rain?  Gray skies?  Nothing could stop the spirit of Welcome Bash 2014!  The Creche became a "picnic buffet", with the blessing of CYF - Children, Youth and Family Ministry - Covenant is a family.  Julie's artistry turned"old" signs into extras to guide students.   Fred and crew hung them, rain and all.  Kitchen helpers stirred lemonade and iced tea, and cut mountains of watermelon wedges on trays donated by Danny at Aladdin, with help from Chip.  Eighteen volunteers from Covenant, campus, and CWRU alumni set up, served up, and then organized corn hole and ladder golf.  Rev. Amy and church officers joined in after their morning training conference, and Paul Stranahan's trio kept spirits lively.  Willie and crew created a cozy dining space, and then reset for Sunday's Ministry Fair.   A Covenant week-end for everybody.

Wow!

Was this a busy week at Covenant or not????   Hold on to your hat because there is more to come!

Listen to Last Sunday's Introit
As has been the recent tradition, our choir opened their fall season of service with an invocation to the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with "energy divine" and "beams of mercy" as set in a beautiful yet simple early-American tune from the Sacred Harp (18th cent.).    You may listen to this moving piece along with Rev. Vizcaino's Invocation and the first congregational hymn, O Day of Radiant Gladness.

In the Covenant Family

This week we keep in our prayers Bee Carpenter, Ruth Dahm De Vries, Sharoon Hanook and his family, Rolf Krotseng, Vera Orlock, Ed Pembroke, Gloria Ross (Michelle Miller's mother), Marjorie Wadsworth and other Covenant members and friends who are struggling with illness, convalescing, or are home bound.

Prayer:   Gracious Lord, This Sunday we will celebrate the retirement of Laury.  We thank you for his years of service, his commitment to social justice, his love of learning and his gift for teaching.  May his retirement bring fulfillment and happiness.  Amen

Bear one another's burdens,

and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.  Galatians 6:2

The picture above is our sign with question marks instead of numbers, which poses the question to our congregation: how many is enough before you will act? Please note the adult forum on 9/21 (Trigger movie) and 9/28 (congregation discussion/response).
