Questions for Reflection

This Sunday, we will hear and reflect on Psalm 8, also known as a "hymn of creation." Are there times in your life when creation has revealed God's presence to you in a unique way? What does it mean to you that you are created in the image of God? How have you seen God's image in the world around you, in other people, and in your life?

The Lay Worship Leader is Leena Clint.  Children and youth will talk with Ron and Pat James during SOS: Summer of Stories.

Each Sunday one of our Stephen Ministers remains in Christ Chapel following worship to speak with anyone who would like a listening ear or a prayer.

Midweek Music & Meditation, Wednesdays, 4:30-5 pmis offered for anyone who would find comfort in a time of reflection, music, and prayer. Prayer requests placed in The Carpenter's Box on the Christ Chapel table are included in each Midweek Music and Meditation time of prayer.

See the Reverend Amy Starr Redwine
preaching
in the August 10 worship service.

The sermon is "Into the Storm."

Music Notes

This weekend, we welcome the spirit-filled improvisations of jazz with David Kaspar, saxophone, Kristopher Morron, trombone, and Matthew Hadaway, drums. Jazz music is both structured and free, requiring of its musicians a balance of both listening and response to the flow of melody, rhythm and harmony. As you listen, think about the ways in which jazz music typifies our relationships with each other, the call of the Holy Spirit, and the desire for creativity.

Galatians 6:2

Beginning to Say Farewell and Well Done

Laury is a friend, leader, teacher, and tireless worker for outreach. As a result of his efforts, the Church of the Covenant has maintained our heritage role as a leader in mission throughout the Presbytery and Synod. Laury provides support for outreach without searching for acknowledgment. His quiet, humble and unassuming personality reflects that of his wonderful parents. All who had the opportunity to meet his parents could observe a loving and humble couple.

With Laury's leadership it was a privilege for Susan to serve on the diaconate and for Arnie to serve on the outreach committee. We especially remember one of his early outreach activities was to provide guidance and leadership for the Covenant to sponsor the Seneboutarahs, a Laotian boat family, a project that involved many members and generated enthusiasm from the whole congregation.

When our daughters were growing up in the church, every Sunday during the service Laury told a children's story. Laury sat on the steps up front, and the children gathered around him. The adults enjoyed his stories as much as the children did.

After Susan's mother died, Laury was very comforting and sympathetic. When Susan apologized for crying, Laury was reassuring by saying, "Adult children are permitted to cry."

Arnie enjoyed discussing the early church and gnostic gospels with Laury, with his knowledge of these topics. We also remember Laury's procrastination prior to preparing a sermon. Then after a long night of preparation, he always preached an interesting, thoughtful and meaningful sermon. We will always remember his many contributions to the Church of the Covenant. It has been a great blessing to have him with us all these years, and we give thanks that God brought him to us.

Statement of Faith - Thane I. Jones

Thane I Jones is the son of Brian and Sarah Jones; Bob Ault is his mentor.

I believe in an awesome God who we belong to in life and in death. I believe that the Lord sent Jesus to live in the world to be a representative of him. The Holy Spirit is what lives inside of me and others too, so when I die the Holy Spirit will guide me to heaven. I have spent my years at Convent since I was a child because I am the Third generation of my family. As time passed I grew in to trust in the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit lives inside of all living things.

As humans and "sons and daughters " of the Lord , we share the attribute called Love because " In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God's image , male and female , of every race and people to live as one community ."

Like my middle name "IMMANUEL" means "GOD IS WITH US"

How I spent my summer?  Thank you!

Summer. . . vacation??  Some of these lovely summer days have found Ann Williams, chair of the Children, Youth and Families Ministries Committee, and Dee Hough, in the  Education Wing. They have worked with enthusiasm and joy to clean out and decorate the Sonia Golden Room and its surroundings. And many thanks to Willie Parker and our custodial crew for their help!  It's bright, inviting, and ready for our children and youth at Covenant.  So bring yours, or invite the neighbors'.  There's a place for them here!

Thank you to Eileen Vizcaino for capturing this.

Gay Games Multifaith Worship

The Gay Games Multifaith Worship Service on Monday August 11, attracted over fifty area clergy and hundreds of worshipers to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.  Celebrating with music, song, and scripture of their respective faiths, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish and Muslim clergy celebrated their traditions in the light of inclusiveness for all people, God's children, joined by leaders of service groups from as far away as El Salvador and Israel. Reverend Eileen Vizcaino participated in the clergy procession.

The Church of the Covenant welcomes

on and off the playing fields.

Christians Bear Witness

Since a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, killing 26 people, 20 of them children, 251 people in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. The deaths of two more souls are added this week:Markies D. Weeks and Isaiah C. Odens.

The Reducing Gun Violence Task Force of the Church of the Covenant's Outreach and Social Justice Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the church office area. Anyone desiring to help address the evil of gun violence in our community and nation is invited to attend.

Believing God calls us to be peacemakers, by Session action, we include in the Prayer of Thanksgiving, Intercession and Petition, once each month, specific concern for people affected by gun violence and addressing the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell.

Tell your Senators what you believe they should do about gun control.
