Sixth Sunday After Pentecost
Youth Mission Trip Worship Service
10 AM
June 30, 2013
This week our Church youth who have been revitalized in the spirit of the Lord following their week of service to others. They will lead us in Worship. Included in the service will be a Litany of Creation and Faith which was adapted by Lauren Finkenthal, Jonathan Goins, and Naomi Marsh from an original text written by Ann Weems. Reflections will be offered by Rev. Jonyrma Singleton, Maximilian Haiss, and Therese Haiss. This week's Bible teachings are Colossians 3:12-14 and Luke 6:43-44.
Colossians 3:12-14 - Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Luke 6:43-44 - No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briers.
The Lay Worship Leader this Sunday is Venerine Branham who is a well known educator and advocate of youth in our community.
Each Sunday one of our Stephen Ministers remains in Christ Chapel following worship to speak with anyone who needs a listening ear or a prayer.

Covenant Welcomes Our Youth To Our Pulpit this week.
 |
Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.
Romans 12:15-18

Sunday our worship service is being led by our youth who participated in our week long mission trip that took them to Warren/Youngstown area where they served on several projects. Their focus was on gardening at several sites and serving those at rescue mission centers. They partnered with the youth and adults in our Presbytery who were from Valley Presbyterian Church (Chagrin Falls), and Church of the Western Reserve. Those from Covenant who attended were Rachel Bromelmeier, Rebecca Bromelmeier, Laura Finkenthal, Jonathan Goins, Julia Haiss, Max Haiss, Carter Langmack, Kyle Langmack, Midori Marsh, Naomi Marsh, Justin Mitchell, Tatianna Moss, and Kayla Clint. The adult volunteers who helped to transport youth as well as stayed the week were Bob Ault, Lauren Mailey, John Marsh, Luther Moss and Rev. Jonyrma.

This week we keep in our prayers Erik Kratky, Fred Mailey, Michelle Milano, Beulah Nixon, Christian Steppes, Barbara Thatcher Williams, and other Covenant members and friends who are struggling with illness, convalescing, or are homebound.
Rev. David Goodrum, son of Presbyterian missionaries to the Congo and cousin of Pat Owen-Keltner, died on June 15 in Marietta, GA.
Our sympathy is with the family of Linda Cochran, who died on June 20. Ms. Cochran took pride in her work as housekeeper with Church of the Covenant, sharing a zest for life and trust in her Lord. Linda was an STNA (State Tested Nursing Assistant) before her illness forced her into retirement; she was working towards becoming a pastor.
Prayer for Transition: As we face this time of church transition, we seek your guidance. May our thoughts and words mirror the love you have so freely given us.
Bear one another's burdens,
and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2

Music Notes
We welcome soprano soloist and Covenant member Midori Marsh to our service today. Midori Marsh, a recent Heights High School graduate, began her musical education at age 7, when she started taking piano. When she was 12 her father urged her to take a voice lesson, and from there she discovered the hobby that would eventually become her chosen major. She continued to take lessons and perform in small concerts until she got a lead in the middle school play, Pippin. This experience led her to audition for the high school's A Capella choir as a freshman. Over the next four years she joined the Heights singers, honors ensemble and women's barbershop, and participated in school plays as Maria in The Sound of Music and as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera. She has studied voice with Carolyn Sloan-Smith, Cydney London Speers, and is currently studying with Lynne Hoffman-Engel. She participated in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus and the Ohio All State Choir and served as the Ann Howard Choral Scholar at the Church of the Covenant. She plans to pursue a degree in vocal performance at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, studying with Kimberly Barber.
My Year as the Ann Howard Choral Scholar by Midori Marsh -- This year I had the honor of being a member of the Covenant choir, as the 2012-13 Ann Howard choral scholar. I enjoyed working with every member whose experience gave them a thorough understanding of musical terms and directions. It was so easy to get things done! It really raised my choral standards. I learned a lot without even knowing that it was happening. I learned to be on time more, to be able to blend with a small group and even to improve my sight reading skills-something I was very grateful for on the AP Music Theory test! Through this choir I've had so many meaningful experiences, like singing in a meditative Taiz service, and some amazing opportunities, like joining the Case Concert Choir to sing a major choral work with a full orchestra. The skills I've learned and the memories I've made will definitely go with me to college, and help me when studying my major, voice. I'm so glad that I was able to participate this year, even if it meant waking up early on Sundays. I would like to thank everyone at our church for supporting the wonderful music program here, the choir members for their friendship and guidance and Jonathan for his great leadership.

Ministering To Our Nearby Students
Attracted by our carillon, Jasmine Wong and Yoke Hiong came to Covenant last Sunday. Both are public health nurses here for a week-long conference, so "students". Chaplain Eileen invited them to join her and others at the Cleveland International Folk Festival on Wade Oval where they enjoyed an ethnic lunch and folk dancers of 17 nationalities. Then a visit to the Botanical Garden. Covenant can be a haven and a crossroads for the world. Praise be to God for Rev. Eileen and her ministry!
