The Day of Pentecost
Spirit-filled Improvization of Jazz Worship
10 AM
May 19, 2013
Dr. Campbell's sermon is entitled Incendiary Purpose. The scripture lessons are Acts 2:1-7, 12-17 and Luke 12:22-31, 54-56.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4
Denise Horstman is the lay leader.
Each Sunday one of our Stephen Ministers remains in Christ Chapel following worship to speak with anyone who needs a listening ear or a prayer.

In the Covenant Family
This week we keep in our prayers Erik Kratky, Gerald Layton, Christian Steppes, Kim Voss, and other Covenant members and friends who are struggling with illness, convalescing, or are home bound.
David and Pat Keltner rejoice that their son survived and was uninjured in a mountain lion attack. Details HERE.
Prayer for Transition: As we face this time of church transition, we seek your guidance. May our thoughts and words mirror the love you have so freely given us.
Bear one another's burdens,
and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2

Music Notes
We welcome the spirit-filled improvisations of jazz to our Pentecost service with David Kaspar, saxophone and flute, Kristopher Morron, trombone, and Matthew Hadaway, drums.
The choir sings the motet, O Sacrum Convivium (O Sacred Banquet, text by Thomas Aquinas), by the French composer, Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). Written quite early in his career (1937), the motet's tranquil harmony shares many of the same techniques employed in jazz music.

Anthem: Psalm 150 by Heinrich Schütz
Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
Praise him in his mighty firmament!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
Praise him according to his exceeding greatness!
Praise him with trumpet sound; Praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with timbrel and dance; Praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; Praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Psalm 150 King James Version
In the coming weeks this space will include more music from the dedication Sunday.

2013 PEACEMAKING OFFERING WILL BE RECEIVED IN WORSHIP SUNDAY
Stop in the office & see what the men in Grafton Correctional Institution have created. They are not allowed to have sharp instruments and the wooden objects above were created using Popsicle sticks and nail clippers.
The Peacemaking Offering gives us a concrete way of living and working in response to Christ's call to be peacemakers. Seventy-five percent of the offering funds the Peacemaking Program of our denomination, enabling us to bring International Peacemakers, share conferences and advocate for active nonviolent solutions to conflicts, equipping all Presbyterians to bear witness to how we can live out our faith in the midst of challenge and violence. Twenty-five percent of the offering is retained by our congregation to support our own peacemaking efforts. The Outreach and Social Justice Committee has designated our portion of the 2013 Peacemaking Offering to the Grafton Community Service Program. Men in the Grafton Correctional Institution are creating toys and other handicrafts that are shared with families and children through local nonprofit organizations. The program affords the men an opportunity of contributing positively to the community . A sample of their toys and handicrafts is on display in the church office. An offering envelope is inserted in Sunday's bulletin.

Students Helping VA Hospital Patients
At SpringFest on the CWRU campus, SCC: Student Community@Covenant offered students all the makings for fresh flower mini-bouquets. Most offered their creations to the veterans at the VA hospital. Here SCC President Brandon McCracken delivers them to a hospital staffer, with the help of Eileen, taking photos. Half of the flowers were donated by the horticulture department at Whole Foods Market, a frequent community partner. Bouquets were distributed to vets at hospital religious services.
