September - Re-Framing Service Issues as Human Rights Issues

Presenters
: Dr. Marcia Rioux and colleagues from York University's Critical Disability Studies Master's and Doctoral programs

This webinar will explain the importance of using human rights as a framework for promoting change.  All too often, our concerns get treated as mere "service" issues, vulnerable to being dismissed.  A human rights perspective can strengthen arguments for action and lead to sweeping, systemic change.

Questions and Answers about Webinars
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Are Webinars Accessible?
Yes!
The IDEAL Conference Centre is accessible for people with disabilities, including those using JAWS.  Captioning and other supports can be provided for those who pre-register.  It's meant for everyone.
Please indicate the accommodations needed when you register for the webinar and let us know if your plans change and you will not be attending.  This will help us cancel services we do not need, and stretch our dollars to offer accommodation at other webinars where it is needed.
Do I need to buy special software?
No.
There is a free application you need to download from the IDEAL website link provided.  It should be freshly downloaded each time you use it.  This makes sure you have the latest, updated version.
Do I need to have a microphone to use it?
No.  If you do not have a microphone or if you cannot speak clearly, you can participate by typing your messages.  Everyone has access to typed messages in either visual or audio format (or both!) These are built-in accessibility features.
What is a webinar like?
First you go to our IDEAL link.  Download the plug-in and enter using "Option 1" if you can.  Mac users will need Option 2, as will those with incompatible systems.
Once you sign on and enter the Auditorium, you are basically in a chat room with a white board.
You will hear the host speaking and will see the names of others who are in the room.  Once the presentation begins, you will hear the speaker and see their powerpoint presentation (if he or she is using one).  If you entered using "option 2", you will NOT be able to see the powerpoint.  Our presenters are always reminded to read out what is on the powerpoint as they go through their presentations.
If you require captioning and let us know ahead of time through the registration process, you will have a link to the captioning service's website.  You will have the option to overlay the captioning box on a corner of the chat room or tile the chat room with the captioning.
The conference room has many accessibility options available to accommodate participants who may be blind, have low vision or learning disabilities.
Some presenters like to have questions and discussion as they go along, and others prefer to wait until the end.  You will be able to ask questions verbally if you are using a microphone, or type your questions in the chat area.  It is an open forum, so everyone can access what is being asked.
Together we are stronger.
