MFP Teams Up with Princeton Internship in Civil Service Program

for Summertime Fun!

Kathryn and Chloe

Welcome Kathryn & Chloe!

Each summer, MFP has the pleasure of hosting Princeton Internship in Civil Service Program (PICS). This year, we are happy to welcome interns, Kathryn and Chloe!

During their ten week internship, Kathryn and Chloe will coordinate workshops, field trips, guest speakers, educational opportunities and culturally-inspired food events as part of MFP's Cultural Inclusion Project (CIP); the goal being to expose youth to places and activities they have never had the opportunity to experience. The young people are the true beneficiaries, as they explore world cultures and diversity throughout Los Angeles. This programming is sponsored by Paul Haaga, whose dedication and support make the CIP possible.

The 10-week internship also provides a valuable opportunity for students to explore potential careers in public service and the non-profit sector and  exposes them to advocacy on behalf of the community.

Here are some of the adventures Kathryn and Chloe have planned for the young people:

LACMA

MOCA

The Getty Center

Griffith Park Observatory

The Huntington Library

The Natural History Museum

California Science Center

African American Museum

Hollywood Bowl

Aquarium of the Pacific

Olvera Street

Chinatown

Grammy Museum

Downtown Art Walk

Concerts in the Park

and more!

David Filice

David is the creator of MFP's Recording Workshop, but first learned about us over ten years ago from listening to the The Phil Hendrie Show.

He was inspired to come in for a tour to learn about the workshops, and said of his experience with MFP:

"In addition to all of the great basic services they provide to the youth, I noticed they also offered great programs like creative writing and Cirque workshop. When I learned that they didn't have a music workshop, my friend Mike Westbrook and I started one with the basics. It eventually grew into a workshop with instruments and lessons and branched off to become a recording/music production workshop."

David works with Transformative Education staff each week to help youth create and produce their own music, adding:

Everyone loves and connects to music in different ways. I think it is important for those who have a talent and interest in creating music be provided a conduit for expression in that way. And I learn from them every time I do the workshop. There are so many talented young people who participate in Recording Workshop, and stories they have to tell are incredible; I love hearing what they come up with week after week. Writing and performing music can be a very cathartic and healing experience. I think it is great that MFP is providing a place where they can express themselves through music.

I feel very fortunate to do the work I do professionally in the music world and it is a privilege for me to be able to bring whatever experience I can to the youth of MFP through this workshop.

When asked what his favorite aspect of MFP, he answered:

"The great staff, the youth, and all the great services they provide. Everyone on the staff seems to really love what they do and care so much about the young people and that is great to see"

MFP is so proud to have David on our team to help inspire youth.
You rock!
