Annual Meeting of the Congregation
Our Annual Meeting of the Congregation will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015, immediately following our 9:30 am worship.  We will serve brunch and begin our business.  In addition to the normal agenda of approving the annual budget, the  Church Council will bring a request to amend the Endowment Fund Agreement as indicated below.  In addition to the normal agenda of approving the Annual Budget, the Church Council will bring a request to amend the Endowment Fund Agreement as indicated below. 
 

Motion to amend the St Paul Endowment Fund Agreement Article III Section 3.4 to change the distribution percentage limit from 4% to 5%.  Article 3.4 would thus read:

"Distributions may be made from the Fund, as directed by Council, to a maximum of 5% of the recent three-year average of the year-end Net Asset Value, except as provided in Sections 3.5 and 3.6."

 

This change will increase the amount of annual support allowed to the General Fund budget in any year. The actual amount will be recommended by Council each year and will need to be approved by the congregation as part of the budget approval.    The change will allow more of the Endowment Fund's earnings to be used for ministry each year.  Existing provisions preserving the Historic Dollar Value of the Fund remain unchanged.  

 

Beach Blanket Bingo Party!
All children are invited to attend the Beach Blanket Bingo Party during the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 25, immediately following the service.   What is better than the beach at this time of year? 

Children can wear their beach attire to church or bring it to change into before the party.  We will have finger foods, beach ball games, a video with popcorn and, of course, BINGO with prizes!  Middle school and high school students will serve as lifeguards to help assure that our afternoon at the beach is fun and safe!

Faith Formation
There is no Sunday School this week.  Instead, the children will be entertained by the youth at Beach, Blanket Bingo! Flip-flops, sun hats and beach wear are encouraged!!

 

The next Confirmation class for youth in Middle School and their parents is Monday, January 26, 7 - 8:15 am starting in the Bethany room. There will be a meal for all families in the Children's choirs and Confirmation beginning at 5:30 pm in Sandrock Hall.  For more information visit www.stpaulgpconfirm.org 

 

Stepping into God's Word Milestone

This Sunday, we celebrate in worship the presentation of Bibles to children who have participated in a Bible workshop. This is part of our Milestone Ministry program.

Please plan to share the joy of our next Jazz service on Sunday, February 8, by inviting a friend! The children and youth will be leading worship and the Adult Forum is on St. Paul's Thrivent Builds trip to Romania in August 2015. This is a great opportunity to invite friends and neighbors to come and see!

God's Work, Our Hands
Grace in Action
Our focus this month is on our partnership with Grace In Action.  Grace in Action is an ELCA  community of faith, based in the Radical Love of Jesus Christ.  Grace in Action's goals are to reclaim the mission of the church, create authentic community, be transformed by God and one another, and build a more just society for all of God's people. 

This faith community is in southwest Detroit and has established several business cooperatives, programs and creative ways to live out the Gospel in the neighborhoods. 

Paper Bag Raffle
for National Gathering Kick-Off
Did you receive a gift at Christmas that you cannot really use or have new items around the house you are looking to donate?  Re-gift those items to the students attending the National Gathering this summer! 

Simply bring your items to the Church Office before
Friday, January 23, and they will be entered into the Paper Bag Raffle to be held before and after the Annual Meeting.  An arm's-length of raffle tickets for $20 and an elbow-length for $10! 

Put your tickets in the bag for any of the items you are interested in and the drawing will take place during the Annual Meeting.  Promises to be a fun way to support and encourage our students who are working to raise funds for the National Gathering tuition and expenses.  Thank you!!!

Gateshead Senior Living Community
St. Paul will be hosting a Bingo Party at Gateshead Senior Living Community on
Friday, February 13, at 12:45 pm.  If you are able to help with this event, please contact Margy Huizinga.  A basket is in the Harms Fireside Room for collection of Bingo prizes.

2015 ELCA Youth Gathering
in Detroit July 15-19
Rise Up!! Hello from your Local Volunteer Coordinators for the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit July 15-19, 2015.
  
If you are interested in serving as a local adult volunteer for the Youth Gathering, there are still openings and we need your help.  This message will explain the types of volunteers needed and how to sign up.  Also look for upcoming Information Forums throughout the Synod.  Thank you for your interest and help.

 

The Local Volunteer Corps (LVC) will serve in a wide variety of roles, including general hospitality, communion servers, drivers, money counters, set up and clean up, and many others. The LVC is comprised of "local" adults that are not in need of housing, have a specific time frame they are able to commit to, will be able to drive themselves on a daily basis to Detroit and will receive a food voucher and entrance to that day's Mass Gathering as a thank you for your time.  The Local Volunteer Coordinator will match your gifts with our needs. The list of needs is incomplete at this time so we will be unable to make matches yet.  But once you have signed up, we will confirm that we have received your application.  

  

Serving the 2015 ELCA Gathering  

in Detroit as a Local Volunteer

 

Hundreds of local volunteers are an essential component of the ELCA Gathering being held in Detroit 
July 15-19, 2015.

Local volunteers can serve for one, two, three or more days or even one day for 2-4 hours! Responsibilities include offering counters, communion assistants, hospitality, drivers (rental vehicles provided), set up/clean up, etc. Specific responsibilities will be communicated in the spring.

 

If you are available to serve the ELCA Gathering as a local volunteer, please follow the instructions below today:

 

Step 1    Go to: https://www.conferencebuilders.com/elca2015/teams/start.asp

Step 2   Click on "New registration" (in red)
Step 3   Be sure to choose "Local Arrang." (Beth Smallbeck) from the drop down menu
Step 4   Fill out the registration form disregarding the arrival and departure dates

 

Local volunteers do not receive housing but do receive meal vouchers. Volunteer registration is still open for Community Life and Servant Companions (young adults) for individuals who can commit to the entire event (housing and meals provided). During the Gathering, the Youth will spend one day in the community for their day of service, interaction and assistance with local organizations in one of six interest areas (IAs):


* Housing Matters
* Education
* Environmental Sustainability
* Cultural Immersion / Arts
* Food / Food Justice
* Care in Communities

 

There will be about 12,000 youth working at up to 270 sites each day for three days 

(July 16-18). 

  
A special local volunteer corps will directly support the Service Learning (SL) activities. The Service Learning Team has needs for Site Captains to coordinate and oversee the projects at each Service Learning Site, and for Skilled Labor, Safety and Security support, and other hands on type opportunities.  The SL volunteers will be out in the community.
