Annual Meeting of the Congregation
Our Annual Meeting of the Congregation will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015, immediately following our 9:30 am worship.  We will serve brunch and begin our business.  In addition to the normal agenda of approving the annual budget, the  Church Council will bring a request to amend the Endowment Fund Agreement as indicated below.  In addition to the normal agenda of approving the Annual Budget, the Church Council will bring a request to amend the Endowment Fund Agreement as indicated below.

Motion to amend the St Paul Endowment Fund Agreement Article III Section 3.4 to change the distribution percentage limit from 4% to 5%.  Article 3.4 would thus read:

"Distributions may be made from the Fund, as directed by Council, to a maximum of 5% of the recent three-year average of the year-end Net Asset Value, except as provided in Sections 3.5 and 3.6."

This change will increase the amount of annual support allowed to the General Fund budget in any year. The actual amount will be recommended by Council each year and will need to be approved by the congregation as part of the budget approval.    The change will allow more of the Endowment Fund's earnings to be used for ministry each year.  Existing provisions preserving the Historic Dollar Value of the Fund remain unchanged.

Faith Formation
This week in Sunday School, the children and middle school youth will discuss the Baptism and Temptation of Jesus.  The high school youth will plan the Beach Blanket Bingo Party and consider service projects to support Grace in Action.   The children and youth will begin planning their roles in leading worship on February 8.

Confirmation class meets Monday January 12, 7 - 8:15 pm.  Students are asked to bring both their Faith5 Journals.  There will be a family meal beginning at 5:30 pm in Sandrock Hall for all families in the Confirmation and the children's choir for a freewill offering.  More information is listed on the website www.stpaulgpconfirm.org

Stepping into God's Word Milestone
The first milestone celebration will be gifting children with a Bible embossed with their name in worship on Sunday, January 25.  Children in grade 3 and older are invited to participate with an adult in a workshop on Saturday, January 24, 9 - 10:30 am.  Please contact the Church Office to register your child, grandchild, or godchild.

Friendship Sunday February 8
Please plan to share the joy of our next Jazz service on Sunday, February 8, by inviting a friend!  The children and youth will be leading worship and the Adult Forum is on St. Paul's Thrivent Builds trip to Romania in August 2015.  This is a great opportunity to invite friends and neighbors to come and see!

Volunteers needed for
Gleaner's Food Bank!
Our next scheduled work day is
Saturday, January 10, from 9-11:30 am.  Meet at the church to carpool at
8:30 am.

Gleaner's requires a headcount in order to plan the work for volunteers so please sign up.  A poster is provided in the Narthex or RSVP to Shelley Reisen at 882-8099 or treisen@comcast.net.

This event is most appropriate for students in middle or high school and adults.  Come be a part of "God's Work Our Hands" in action.
God's Work, Our Hands
Grace in Action
Our focus this month is on our partnership with Grace In Action.  Grace in Action is an ELCA  community of faith, based in the Radical Love of Jesus Christ.  Grace in Action's goals are to reclaim the mission of the church, create authentic community, be transformed by God and one another, and build a more just society for all of God's people.

This faith community is in southwest Detroit and has established several business cooperatives, programs and creative ways to live out the Gospel in the neighborhoods.

Rev. John Cummings will speak at the Adult Forum on
January 18 and share about Grace in Action's ministry and growth as well as partnership opportunities for the people of St. Paul.
Beach Blanket Bingo Party!
All children are invited to attend the Beach Blanket Bingo Party during the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 25, immediately following the service.   What is better than the beach at this time of year?

Children can wear their beach attire to church or bring it to change into before the party.  We will have finger foods, beach ball games, a video with popcorn and, of course, BINGO with prizes!  Middle school and high school students will serve as lifeguards to help assure that our afternoon at the beach is fun and safe!
Opportunities Abound to Help
St. Paul's "God's Work. Our Hands" t-shirts are still available - all proceeds are going to Grace in Action's enterprising youth business "Stitching Up Detroit".  We would like to support their efforts - so ask a High School student to sell you a shirt or contact Mary Weiland at mary@weilandfamily.com or
313-885-6326.
Coats for Freedom House
We were able to match several coat sizes for the Freedom House residents but are still looking for men's winter coats in sizes medium and small.  Also, women's winter coats in medium and one 2X.

Please contact Mary Weiland (313-885-6326) or mary@weilandfamily.com if you are able to contribute.  They can be dropped off in the Church Office or picked up from your home.  Thank you!

2015 ELCA Youth Gathering
in Detroit July 15-19
Rise Up!! Hello from your Local Volunteer Coordinators for the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit July 15-19, 2015.

If you are interested in serving as a local adult volunteer for the Youth Gathering, there are still openings and we need your help.  This message will explain the types of volunteers needed and how to sign up.  Also look for upcoming Information Forums throughout the Synod.  Thank you for your interest and help.

The Local Volunteer Corps (LVC) will serve in a wide variety of roles, including general hospitality, communion servers, drivers, money counters, set up and clean up, and many others. The LVC is comprised of "local" adults that are not in need of housing, have a specific time frame they are able to commit to, will be able to drive themselves on a daily basis to Detroit and will receive a food voucher and entrance to that day's Mass Gathering as a thank you for your time.  The Local Volunteer Coordinator will match your gifts with our needs. The list of needs is incomplete at this time so we will be unable to make matches yet.  But once you have signed up, we will confirm that we have received your application.

Serving the 2015 ELCA Gathering

in Detroit as a Local Volunteer

Hundreds of local volunteers are an essential component of the ELCA Gathering being held in Detroit
July 15-19, 2015.

Local volunteers can serve for one, two, three or more days or even one day for 2-4 hours! Responsibilities include offering counters, communion assistants, hospitality, drivers (rental vehicles provided), set up/clean up, etc. Specific responsibilities will be communicated in the spring.

If you are available to serve the ELCA Gathering as a local volunteer, please follow the instructions below today:

Step 1    Go to: https://www.conferencebuilders.com/elca2015/teams/start.asp

Step 2   Click on "New registration" (in red)
Step 3   Be sure to choose "Local Arrang." (Beth Smallbeck) from the drop down menu
Step 4   Fill out the registration form disregarding the arrival and departure dates

Local volunteers do not receive housing but do receive meal vouchers. Volunteer registration is still open for Community Life and Servant Companions (young adults) for individuals who can commit to the entire event (housing and meals provided). Find information at: http://www.elca.org/YouthGathering/Registration/Volunteers

Look for 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering Volunteer Opportunity community meetings being held throughout the synod in late fall. Feel free to contact Local Volunteers Coordinator, Claudia Karpinskas, if you have questions or concerns. karpinskas@sbcglobal.net   Cell 248-227-9032

During the Gathering, the Youth will spend one day in the community for their day of service, interaction and assistance with local organizations in one of six interest areas (IAs):

* Housing Matters
* Education
* Environmental Sustainability
* Cultural Immersion / Arts
* Food / Food Justice
* Care in Communities

There will be about 12,000 youth working at up to 270 sites each day for three days

(July 16-18).

A special local volunteer corps will directly support the Service Learning (SL) activities. The Service Learning Team has needs for Site Captains to coordinate and oversee the projects at each Service Learning Site, and for Skilled Labor, Safety and Security support, and other hands on type opportunities.  The SL volunteers will be out in the community.

If you are interested in a Service Learning volunteer opportunity, you must sign up with the Local Volunteer Corps (link above) AND sign up with the Service Learning link below.   Service Learning Job Descriptions are attached to the sign up form for your convenience. If you have questions about volunteering for Service Learning, please contact Dave Upmeyer, Service Learning Volunteer Coordinator, at Dave.Upmeyer@gmail.com or call at 313 881-9522 (home) or 313 378-3793 (cell).

A Weekly Devotion from the
Southeast Michigan Synod, ELCA
Week prior to Sunday, January 11, 2015
By Robin J. McCants
Assistant to the Bishop for Advocacy and Urban Ministry Southeast Michigan Synod, ELCA

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day.
Genesis 1:1-5 (NIV)

January! How many times have I started thinking about my new year and those resolutions I "promise I will live into" mostly in January, but sometimes even in December. If I'm really feeling confident and positive, those resolutions start forming in November, around Thanksgiving, because after all of the excessive eating, it does the mind good to think of a good exercise program that will start weeks later, way into the New Year.

I resolve to read my Bible every morning. I resolve to pray every night. I resolve to be a better steward of my money and to account for all of my spending habits. I will get 20 minutes of exercise daily, even when I feel ill. I will be more organized in ALL that I do! ..and then it's February and suddenly I cannot find my check list of resolutions because I used it for scratch paper for my grocery list weeks earlier!

I give thanks, God is not unorganized and uncommitted to us, the way we can be towards resolutions. What if God treated the Creation in the same regard? Can you imagine what the world would be like .... I cannot because the thought makes me shudder! God is God all by God's self and uncomplicated by our human shortcomings. The sun rises and sets each day. The seasons change. People are born and others pass away. It's all in God's time and it happens regardless of how we try to manage it. Yes, we can work towards being better people, and it takes work. But the creation ... the beautiful, mysterious creation of the heavens and the earth ... are but a gift to us from God.

Questions to Ponder:
1. How do you call upon God to guide you through the many nuances of your day?
2. How do you recognize God's hand in your decisions and choices?

Seven Word Prayer:
God of all creation live in me. Amen
