Sunday School
All children and youth are asked to join the Sunday School opening to receive their parts in the Christmas program.  After the opening, the children will learn about God's plan of salvation through the lives of Isaac and Rebekah.

The Middle school youth will discuss God's abundance.

The High School will continue working on the TIP (Transition to Independence Program) gift baskets which will be presented on December 4 at the TIP Warrior dinner at Wayne State which St. Paul is serving.

The next Confirmation class meets November 17, from  7 - 8:15 to further discuss Martin Luther and The Reformation. The current Faith5 and home assignment are posted on the website www.stpaulgpconfirm.org  Students are asked to bring their Faith5 Journal.  Childcare will be provided for siblings.  The next Monday meal is December 1.

Please join St. Paul's Operation Christmas Child Shoebox collection by packing a shoebox for a child living in difficult circumstances.  Shoe boxes are distributed through local churches around the world.  St. Paul's former missionary in Liberia shared that shoe boxes were shared through the Lutheran church there.  Please see www.samaritanspurse.org  for more details.  The final collection day at St. Paul is Sunday, November 23
Kitchen Assistants Needed for Advent Workshop on Sunday, November 23 and/or with setup
on Saturday, November 22.
Many hands make light work. So with this in mind, we are looking for some hands to help set up and serve at the Potluck Lunch before the Advent Workshop on November 23. Help before, during, or after (any time between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM). It is a great opportunity for fellowship and you don't need to cook anything extra or go to any meetings!

 Advent Workshop Potluck Information
Sunday, November 23, marks the Annual Advent Craft Workshop and Potluck.  How does the Potluck work?  Bring your favorite potluck supper dish (enough to serve 8) (NO desserts please), to the kitchen downstairs before service or during Sunday School. Make sure it is warm.  We will keep it warm for you in the ovens and will put it out for you with a serving utensil in time for the lunch.  Hot dogs for the young children, salad, bread, dessert, coffee, milk, and ice water will be provided.  This is a great opportunity for fellowship and a chance to get to know your fellow congregation members better. Many hands make light work, of course, so please consider joining us in the kitchen.  Call Gerrie Spezia (313-882-6745) with any questions or to help out in any way.

Pastor Dittrich's formal Installation as our Pastor will take place at the 9:30 am Worship Service on December 7.  Southeast Michigan Synod Bishop Donald Kreiss will preach, and Conference Dean Pastor George Oberle will officiate at the Installation.  Come join us on this festive day as we officially begin this new era of ministry at St. Paul.
God's Work, Our Hands
Family Thanksgiving Baskets
thanksging basket
Donations to the Pastor's Discretionary Fund are needed to help purchase food and Kroger Gift Cards in order to prepare baskets for families in need of a Thanksgiving Dinner.  Any amount would be appreciated!  Thank you for considering the needs of others during this season of sharing.
Opportunities Abound to Help
During the month of  November, please bring any gently-used coats that your family has outgrown or no longer needs.  A bin for the Coat Drive will be in the foyer and donated coats will go to Cass Community Services and  Freedom House.   Coat collection will occur through November 23.

St. Paul's "God's Work. Our Hands" t-shirts are still available - all proceeds are going to Grace in Action's enterprising youth business "Stitching Up Detroit".  We would like to support their efforts - so ask a High School student to sell you a shirt or contact Mary Weiland at mary@weilandfamily.com or 313-885-6326.
Canned Food Drive
Help stock up the St. Paul food pantry!  Canned goods are needed to help supply Iroquois Ave. Lutheran and other local churches.  A collection basket will be provided in the Narthex through the end of November. Items will also be collected at the Thanksgiving Eve service on Wednesday, November 26, as part of the offering.  Thank you for your help in feeding the hungry in our community.
Transition to Independence (TIP) Update
Thank you so much to all who contributed with funds and items for the Transition to Independence Care Packages!  They are full of wonderful supplies for these young adults who have aged out of foster care and are entering college life with limited support and resources.  Anyone who has sent a child off to college can relate to how costly dorm living can be! Each basket contains a note of encouragement from our high school students. We will also support these students by supplying and serving food at their "WSU Warrior Dinner" on Thursday, December 4, from 6:30 until 8 pm on the WSU campus.  We will set up for the dinner at 4 pm. If you would like to help with this event, please email Shelley Reisen at treisen@comcast.net. Thank you for your support!
LSSM Connection
Persons with Disabilities
lssm Lutheran Social Services of Michigan has many services for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities or both.  LSSM manages properties where individuals bring in caregivers and also have group home sites with 24-hour staffing.  The end goal is the same. LSSM works to integrate their consumers into the larger community by encouraging choice and independence.  Please keep LSSM staff and the families and individuals with disabilities that they serve in your prayers this month.
Gathering  Volunteers Needed
2015 ELCA Youth Gathering
in Detroit July 15-19

Rise Up!! Hello from your Local Volunteer Coordinators for the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit July 15-19, 2015.  If you are interested in serving as a local adult volunteer for the Youth Gathering, there are still openings and we need your help.  This message will explain the types of volunteers needed and how to sign up.  Also look for upcoming Information Forums throughout the Synod.  Thank you for your interest and help.

The Local Volunteer Corps (LVC) will serve in a wide variety of roles, including general hospitality, communion servers, drivers, money counters, set up and clean up, and many others. The LVC is comprised of "local" adults that are not in need of housing, have a specific time frame they are able to commit to, will be able to drive themselves on a daily basis to Detroit and will receive a food voucher and entrance to that day's Mass Gathering as a thank you for your time.  The Local Volunteer Coordinator will match your gifts with our needs. The list of needs is incomplete at this time so we will be unable to make matches yet.  But once you have signed up, we will confirm that we have received your application.

Serving the 2015 ELCA Gathering

in Detroit as a Local Volunteer

Hundreds of local volunteers are an essential component of the ELCA Gathering being held in Detroit July 15-19, 2015. Local volunteers can serve for one, two, three or more days or even one day for 2-4 hours! Responsibilities include offering counters, communion assistants, hospitality, drivers (rental vehicles provided), set up/clean up, etc. Specific responsibilities will be communicated in the spring.

If you are available to serve the ELCA Gathering as a local volunteer, please follow the instructions below today:

Step 1   Go to: https://www.conferencebuilders.com/elca2015/teams/start.asp

Step 2   Click on "New registration" (in red)
Step 3   Be sure to choose "Local Arrang." (Beth Smallbeck) from the drop down menu
Step 4   Fill out the registration form disregarding the arrival and departure dates

Local volunteers do not receive housing but do receive meal vouchers. Volunteer registration is still open for Community Life and Servant Companions (young adults) for individuals who can commit to the entire event (housing and meals provided). Find information at: http://www.elca.org/YouthGathering/Registration/Volunteers

Look for 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering Volunteer Opportunity community meetings being held throughout the synod in late fall. Feel free to contact Local Volunteers Coordinator, Claudia Karpinskas, if you have questions or concerns. karpinskas@sbcglobal.net   Cell 248-227-9032

During the Gathering, the Youth will spend one day in the community for their day of service, interaction and assistance with local organizations in one of six interest areas (IAs):

* Housing Matters
* Education
* Environmental Sustainability
* Cultural Immersion / Arts
* Food / Food Justice
* Care in Communities

There will be about 12,000 youth working at up to 270 sites each day for three days (July 16-18).   A special local volunteer corps will directly support the Service Learning (SL) activities. The Service Learning Team has needs for Site Captains to coordinate and oversee the projects at each Service Learning Site, and for Skilled Labor, Safety and Security support, and other hands on type opportunities.  The SL volunteers will be out in the community. If you are interested in a Service Learning volunteer opportunity, you must sign up with the Local Volunteer Corps (link above) AND sign up with the Service Learning link below.   Service Learning Job Descriptions are attached to the sign up form for your convenience. If you have questions about volunteering for Service Learning, please contact Dave Upmeyer, Service Learning Volunteer Coordinator, at Dave.Upmeyer@gmail.com or call at 313 881-9522 (home) or 313 378-3793 (cell).

Community News
Grace in Action
We are happy to share that Grace in Action, a faith-based community in Southwest Detroit, has helped launch a new business cooperative called Action Cleaning.  See below and additional flyers to share are available in the Fireside Room.

The literal translation for the greek word Ekklesia (what we translate as "church") is a democratic assembly. At the time of the crucifixion of Jesus, the Roman empire was setting up their own ekklesia that was about keeping the empire wealthy, strong and powerful. The ekklesia that the early Christians were setting up was literally a cohort of democratic assemblies that stood over and against the Roman Empire's ekklesia. The only reason someone would join the ekklesia of Christ was for a better life and the hope of a better future. As a community, Grace in Action believes that the core of the Gospel is creating and offering people a better life. This life is not only about prayer and community but also about economics. Grace in Action Collectives is a 501c3 that serves as the umbrella organization for two youth collectives and the incubator for those who want to start their own cooperatives and businesses.

This is our mission: Grace in Action Collectives is a welcoming, grassroots community that animates residents, both youth and adults, as leaders in Southwest Detroit through education and cooperative economic development.

"For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away."
Matthew 25:29

This passage is not among my favorites. In fact, I have yet to encounter anyone who has jumped up to say "this is my favorite!" I believe this is because of a misunderstanding that I (and I suspect many others) have carried about parables.

It is often very easy to make quick allegorical assignments about characters in Jesus' parables. In this case, God is the master, the other two slaves are people better than me, and I am the worthless slave with a grim future. Going down this path, it seems fear should be a primary motivator for me to do the right thing. Just to be clear, this is not the direction Jesus is hoping we go with this.

In the verse above, think of all we have from God. Not stuff, but what really matters. God's sincere desire is that we would take what we have been given, and make more, and the way to make more is by sharing. In sharing, we not only give but we receive. When we share, we do not lose what God has already given, but rather we thrive with abundance.

If we perceive we have nothing, it is not because God has failed to give. It is our perception that needs adjustment. May we always be mindful of God's gifts and share them freely.

Questions to Ponder:
1. What really matters in life?

2. What has happened in my life when God's gifts have been shared by/for me?

 Seven Word Prayer:
Help me to be aware and share. Amen
