Adult Bible Study
Tuesday Morning Bible study:  The Tuesday study on the upcoming Sunday's scripture reading will resume after a summer break on September 2, @ 9:30 am. Each week stands on its own so feel free to join the group, as you are able.
Confirmation Program
This year's Catechism study is open to all Middle school-aged youth Grade 6 and above.  It begins Monday, September 8, with a meeting of students and parents (or grandparents or other adult sponsor) from 7 - 8:15 pm in the Harms Fireside Room.   A letter to students and parents with details has been sent to all youth on our roster and is also available from the church office.

Rally Day and Blessing of the Backpacks
September 7 marks the start of a new season of worship and education.  Children are encouraged to bring their school backpacks on Rally Day for a blessing during worship which begins at 9:30 am. Following worship, everyone is invited to the Harms Fireside Room for a welcome to Living the Word Sunday School.
Confirmation Ministry
Dear Parents and Students,

It is our pleasure to invite you to join the Confirmation ministry this year.

Confirmation is a three-year program, usually completed by students in Grades 6, 7, and 8.  Monday night Catechism classes are a cornerstone of the Confirmation program, however, faith also grows during other experiences of sharing God's Word and serving others in the home and community.  St. Paul has lifted up this philosophy of Faith Formation for many years.

Last year, we explored a new Catechism class schedule that paired meeting at church twice a month with home study where parents and students share faith on a daily basis.  This year, we are committing to more fully equip parents to engage with their children by offering a parent component during the Catechism class.  Details of this will be shared at the Orientation session.

It is important during these middle school years to prioritize faith experiences with your child that include regular weekly participation in worship that includes leadership as an acolyte, interacting with peers and adult leaders during Living the Word Sunday School, and serving others in Christ's name.  Think of it as a three-legged stool.  All three are needed; commitment to all components is essential for a solid foundation.

Participation in each component of this program is expected. Please mark your calendar for the following:

*    Saturday, September 6, community service at St. Paul      setting up the Rummage sale, 9-11 am.
*    Sunday, September 7, Rally Day, worship at 9:30 am and start of Living the Word Sunday School.
*    Monday, September 8, Catechism orientation session 7-8:15 pm, in the Fireside room.  Parents and students attend together.
*    Sunday, September 14, Blessing of Confirmation Students and Families in Worship 9:30 am.
*    Monday, September 15, Acolyte training for all students, 7-8:15 pm (parents do not attend).
*    Catechism classes begin Monday, September 22, 7 - 8:15 pm, for students and parents.

Class dates: 9/22, 10/6, 10/20, 11/3, 11/17, 12/1, 12/15, 1/12, 1/26, 2/9, 2/23, 3/9, 3/23, 4/13, 4/27
*    For students in eighth grade: Confirmation May 17, 2015 with rehearsal May 11.

We look forward to accompanying you on the Baptismal journey that will be explored during Catechism.

Yours in Christ,

Calling all rummage sale volunteers!
We are missing a few of the racks for the rummage sale.  If you  have borrowed them, could you please return them as soon as possible.  Thanks so much.

Wanted:  Volunteers for the Rummage Sale September 12 and 13. Thank you to Sue Askew and Becka Jenzen who have answered the call to head the cashier table.

Next on the list of volunteer needs:

Linens Co-chair to assist Karen Ficht. Karen can be there for the sale days, but only limited amounts of time during the set-up period.  So we need some one who likes pretty linens and can sort, fold, and organize them attractively.

Boutique Chair and workers - especially someone to sort and tag jewelry( much can be done at home). Contact Sandy Brown.( 313-881-0581 or browngpf@aol.com )

Snack Supplies and Lunches - Sue Gellasch could use a co-chair to help solicit lunch providers, and to help set-up and clean-up lunches during the set-up week of Sept 8-13. Also, if you are able to prepare a lunch during that work week, contact Sue (313-884-7183 or jsmcgell@comcast.com) .   Donations of snacks, drinks, and desserts are also needed.  Contact Ilene Brown(313-343-0019  o sbrown416@aol.com)  or sign-up on WELCA Bulletin Board.  Money donations to help defray food costs are also welcome.

Electronics, Sports, Tools, Art Work, - need volunteers to help with set-up-especially during the set-up week.

Any questions : contact Liz Jenzen at ejenzen @Ameritech.net.

Odds and Ends
Azar Children's Educational Fund
In an effort to support Pastor Samer Azar who leads our sister congregation in Amman Jordan, St. Paul established the Azar Children's Educational Fund.  This is an ongoing fund used to pay tuition for Nasser and Daniel who enter Grade 7 and 3 this fall.  The Azar children attend The Baptist School of Amman.  There is no Lutheran School in Jordan.   The fall tuition is $2,650.00 and an equal amount will be due in January.

Donations to the Azar Children's Education Fund can be made by check to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church by noting Azar Children's Education Fund on the memo line.  Please note, any donation to this fund does not qualify as tax-deductible giving.
In these troubled times in the Holy Lands, it is vital to uplift those who are preaching the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Our support goes beyond the monetary - it is a symbol of our commitment to all those who serve under difficult circumstances.
Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.
Saturday, September 20, Dr. Mitri Raheb will be giving an all-day seminar titled Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.

In order to prosper and grow-or simply survive-today's Christian congregations are being forced to rethink their traditional approach to outreach and evangelism. Now, as never before, we are challenged to leave our traditional comfort zones, find new ways to share the Word, expand our methods of communication, explore innovative venues for worship, give voice to suffering and injustice, and make our message more relevant to more people.

LSSM Connection
Senior Programs
LSSM Connection:   This month we focus on Lutheran Social Services' Senior Programs.    Please keep the staff who provide care to seniors and the elderly patients and families they serve in your prayers this month.

LSSM serves older adults through senior living residences, rehabilitation services, assisted living facilities, memory care units, skilled nursing programs, home care and HUD subsidized housing. Connecting with our overall vision of sharing in life with all, and upholding every individual's dignity and health, we help older adults find their place in the aging process so they can fulfill their life's potential every single day.

Non-Food Pantry is temporarily closed  but will reopen after the Rummage Sale.  Donations will be accepted after September 15th.  As we cleared out the Non-Food Pantry the remaining paper goods, personal hygiene and cleaning products went to Heartline and Freedom House.  When the donations were delivered to Freedom House the director asked if St. Paul had received a call for this help.  We explained that we had not received a call but were bringing a donation because of clearing out our pantry.  She said they were just about to call churches for help because they had run out of everything and were full with 40 residents!  And that was an example of how our God works in this ministry!  Amen.
