Pastor will be away on Interim Ministry training and vacation beginning July 20 after worship, and will return August 5.

Worship for the next two Sundays will be led by people from our congregation. Please support them through your attendance.

St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church Columbarium
"Dawn Sentinels", by Bob Guelich

This bronze sculpture (superimposed above) is the generous donation of Clara E. Graham in memory of her husband Robert R. Graham who passed away February 4, 2013.  The sculpture is an Artist Proof, Edition 9 of 9, which will be cast in Texas, and installed late fall.  "Dawn Sentinels" depicts two blue herons keeping watch at dawn representing the spirit of awakening and calm protection.  It stands six feet high with a wing span of five feet.  A bronze memorial plaque will be installed along with the sculpture.

The previous eight editions are owned by: Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Texas; Art Investment House, Arizona; City of Dowagiac, Michigan; City of Lee's Summit, Missouri; The Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha Botanical Center, Nebraska; and Private Collectors in Idaho, California, and Texas.

Clara Graham and members of her family, along with members of the congregation, visited the installation in Dowagiac, Michigan to determine the sculpture's suitability for our columbarium.  This donation was approved and accepted by the Church Council and Executive Committee at their June 18, 2014 meeting.

The original master plan for the Memorial/Garden Columbarium, developed by Harley Ellington Pierce Yee Associates, Inc., included a sculpture in the center of the columbarium as shown, a design in keeping with that of other churches in the area.

Call Committee Update
The members of the Call Committee are continuing to discern God's will for our congregation, and our work is now entering a new phase.  After reviewing over 30 profiles from pastors across the country, we have completed the initial interviews of the five top candidates.  We are currently working on setting up second interviews with the three strongest.  We thank you for your prayers and ask that you continue to pray that God would bring us the right candidate for St. Paul and that we would be able to see that person when presented to us.

Gateshead Summer Celebration August 1
St. Paul will be hosting a picnic lunch for the seniors at Gateshead Senior Living Community on Friday, August 1.

If you are able to volunteer your time or would like to help with   food donations of hot dogs, hot dog and hamburger buns, or veggies and dip, please contact Margy Huizinga.

We will meet at Gateshead at 11:30.
Calling all rummage sale volunteers!
St. Paul has been very fortunate to receive 3 partial estate donations. We will need many hands to help sort, display, price and sell, especially in the Boutique.  Can we count on you? The Boutique is still looking for a chairman and someone who has the time to tag jewelry (not price). This task can be done at home during the summer. If you can help in any way, please email Sandy Brown at browngpf@aol.com Your help will be greatly appreciated.=

For the Rummage Sale - September 12 and 13.  If you are good dealing with people and money, we need one ( or two) people to head up the check-out table during the Rummage Sale.  The time commitment - roughly 8:30 AM-4:00 PM Friday and/or Saturday of the sale. We can divide up the responsibilities between several people or it can be given to one person who is available both days.

Also, people to assist with setting up electronics, sports, tools, and linens. Also, some to help provide and prepare lunches and/or donate snacks, drinks, and desserts.

August 1 is the start date for bringing in donations during regular office hours.   It is helpful if you separate and label items according to category.  Thank you for your prayerful consideration of ways you can participate in this important ministry at St. Paul.     Contact Liz Jenzen at ejenzen@ameritech.net or 313-882-3986.

Odds and Ends
Crossroads East and Christ Iroquois Lutheran:Donations of nonperishable food and personal hygiene items in our food cupboard are being shared with Crossroads East at Salem Memorial and the food pantry run by Christ Iroquois Lutheran in Indian Village.   When grocery shopping please help stock our food cupboard located in the narthex.   There is still a great need within the Metro Detroit area.  Thank you for your continued support.

Taizé Worship Services:
A summer Taizé worship service will take place at St. James Lutheran Church, 170 McMillan, Grosse Pointe Farms, on Wednesday, August 6, at 7 pm.  You are welcome to attend!  The beauty of Taizé worship is that it uses a form of short musical phrases with sing able, easily-memorized melodies.  The community of Taizé in France has worked for unity among Christians in all denominations.  The service will include Holy Communion for those who wish to partake.
Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.
Saturday, September 20, Dr. Mitri Raheb will be giving an all-day seminar titled Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.

In order to prosper and grow-or simply survive-today's Christian congregations are being forced to rethink their traditional approach to outreach and evangelism. Now, as never before, we are challenged to leave our traditional comfort zones, find new ways to share the Word, expand our methods of communication, explore innovative venues for worship, give voice to suffering and injustice, and make our message more relevant to more people.

LSSM Connection
Senior Programs

LSSM Connection:   This month we focus on Lutheran Social Services' Senior Programs.    Please keep the staff who provide care to seniors and the elderly patients and families they serve in your prayers this month.

LSSM serves older adults through senior living residences, rehabilitation services, assisted living facilities, memory care units, skilled nursing programs, home care and HUD subsidized housing. Connecting with our overall vision of sharing in life with all, and upholding every individual's dignity and health, we help older adults find their place in the aging process so they can fulfill their life's potential every single day.

Gateshead, the LSSM senior residence that is close to us, will have a Summer Celebration event on August 1 with hotdogs and ice cream sundaes provided by St. Paul volunteers.

Thank you for the very generous donations to Foster Care Campers!  A huge load of camp supplies, clothing, personal care items, water toys, swim suits and swim aids, towels, camp bags and back packs were packed up for the LSSM Foster Care Services staff to distribute.  Also, funds from garden stone sales and Sunday School contributions sent to LSSM Foster Care totalled $1185.00!!  Please keep the children in prayer this week as they are blessed to be part of a camp experience with their siblings.

Non-Food Pantry is temporarily closed  but will reopen after the Rummage Sale.  Donations will be accepted after September 15th.  As we cleared out the Non-Food Pantry the remaining paper goods, personal hygiene and cleaning products went to Heartline and Freedom House.  When the donations were delivered to Freedom House the director asked if St. Paul had received a call for this help.  We explained that we had not received a call but were bringing a donation because of clearing out our pantry.  She said they were just about to call churches for help because they had run out of everything and were full with 40 residents!  And that was an example of how our God works in this ministry!  Amen.
