Gift to the Congregation
Dawn Sentinels by Bob Guelich
This bronze sculpture (superimposed above) is the generous donation of Clara E. Graham in memory of her husband Robert R. Graham who passed away February 4, 2013.  The sculpture is an Artist Proof, Edition 9 of 9, which will be cast in Texas, and installed late fall.  "Dawn Sentinels" depicts two blue herons keeping watch at dawn representing the spirit of awakening and calm protection.  It stands six feet high with a wing span of five feet.  A bronze memorial plaque will be installed along with the sculpture.

The previous eight editions are owned by: Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Texas; Art Investment House, Arizona; City of Dowagiac, Michigan; City of Lee's Summit, Missouri; The Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha Botanical Center, Nebraska; and Private Collectors in Idaho, California, and Texas.

Clara Graham and members of her family, along with members of the congregation, visited the installation in Dowagiac, Michigan to determine the sculpture's suitability for our columbarium.  This donation was approved and accepted by the Church Council and Executive Committee at their June 18, 2014 meeting.

The original master plan for the Memorial/Garden Columbarium, developed by Harley Ellington Pierce Yee Associates, Inc., included a sculpture in the center of the columbarium as shown, a design in keeping with that of other churches in the area.

Call Committee Update
The members of the Call Committee are continuing to discern God's will for our congregation, and our work is now entering a new phase.  After reviewing over 30 profiles from pastors across the country, we have completed the initial interviews of the five top candidates.  We are currently working on setting up second interviews with the three strongest.  We thank you for your prayers and ask that you continue to pray that God would bring us the right candidate for St. Paul and that we would be able to see that person when presented to us.

Calling all rummage sale volunteers!
Wanted:  Volunteers for the Rummage Sale September 12 and 13. Thank you to Sue Askew and Becka Jenzen who have answered the call to head the cashier table.

Next on the list of volunteer needs:

Linens Co-chair to assist Karen Ficht. Karen can be there for the sale days, but only limited amounts of time during the set-up period.  So we need some one who likes pretty linens and can sort, fold, and organize them attractively.

Boutique Chair and workers - especially someone to sort and tag jewelry( much can be done at home). Contact Sandy Brown.( 313-881-0581 or browngpf@aol.com )

Snack Supplies and Lunches - Sue Gellasch could use a co-chair to help solicit lunch providers, and to help set-up and clean-up lunches during the set-up week of Sept 8-13. Also, if you are able to prepare a lunch during that work week, contact Sue (313-884-7183 or jsmcgell@comcast.com) .   Donations of snacks, drinks, and desserts are also needed.  Contact Ilene Brown(313-343-0019  o sbrown416@aol.com)  or sign-up on WELCA Bulletin Board.  Money donations to help defray food costs are also welcome.

Electronics, Sports, Tools, Art Work, - need volunteers to help with set-up-especially during the set-up week.

Any questions : contact Liz Jenzen at ejenzen @Ameritech.net.

Living the Word
Week prior to Sunday, August 10, 2014
The Rev. Sean Ewbank, Pastor of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Grosse Ile, MI and Dean of Conference 7,
Southeast Michigan Synod, ELCA

But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said,
"Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid."
 Matthew 14:27

I have cousins who are farmers in Nebraska.  I don't see them often enough but when we get together awkwardness quickly fades and we fall into easy conversation filled with laughter and grace.  We poke fun at each other for our differences all the while appreciating the gifts and experiences we each bring.

One story that gets recounted at every visit is how back when we were all middle school aged I visited the farm during the winter.  My cousins trailed a saucer sled behind one of the horses and proceeded to drag the city boy through the fields.  It was great so long as we went with the furrows in the fields.  Once they turned and went against the rows the pounding I took was ferocious.  I was determined, however, to hold on so that I would not be seen as being weak.

It may have been that way with the disciples in the boat.  Jesus had asked them to push off shore while he dismissed the crowds and took some private time for prayer.  Then came the winds, which pushed them further off shore.  The waves threatened to swamp the boat.  They did not want to be pushed out away from shore.  Not only did they not want to have their very lives be at risk, they wanted to do what Jesus asked, stay in place for him.  So they strained with all their might fighting a battle they probably would not win.  They wanted their own strength to pull them through and win the day.

My cousins marvel that I did not simply let go.  They would have perceived no weakness, they were amazed at my stubbornness in fighting to hold on.  Jesus reassures the disciples that they are not alone, he is with them.  Their own strength will not win the day but by trusting in Jesus all things are possible.

   Question to Ponder:
In what ways do you stubbornly hold on while
Jesus encourages you to let go and trust?

Seven Word Prayer:
Help me to let go and trust. Amen.

Odds and Ends
Crossroads East and Christ Iroquois Lutheran: Donations of nonperishable food and personal hygiene items in our food cupboard are being shared with Crossroads East at Salem Memorial and the food pantry run by Christ Iroquois Lutheran in Indian Village.   When grocery shopping please help stock our food cupboard located in the narthex.   There is still a great need within the Metro Detroit area.  Thank you for your continued support.

Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.
Saturday, September 20, Dr. Mitri Raheb will be giving an all-day seminar titled Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.

In order to prosper and grow-or simply survive-today's Christian congregations are being forced to rethink their traditional approach to outreach and evangelism. Now, as never before, we are challenged to leave our traditional comfort zones, find new ways to share the Word, expand our methods of communication, explore innovative venues for worship, give voice to suffering and injustice, and make our message more relevant to more people.

LSSM Connection
Senior Programs
LSSM Connection:   This month we focus on Lutheran Social Services' Senior Programs.    Please keep the staff who provide care to seniors and the elderly patients and families they serve in your prayers this month.

LSSM serves older adults through senior living residences, rehabilitation services, assisted living facilities, memory care units, skilled nursing programs, home care and HUD subsidized housing. Connecting with our overall vision of sharing in life with all, and upholding every individual's dignity and health, we help older adults find their place in the aging process so they can fulfill their life's potential every single day.

Gateshead, the LSSM senior residence that is close to us, will have a Summer Celebration event on August 1 with hotdogs and ice cream sundaes provided by St. Paul volunteers.

Thank you for the very generous donations to Foster Care Campers!  A huge load of camp supplies, clothing, personal care items, water toys, swim suits and swim aids, towels, camp bags and back packs were packed up for the LSSM Foster Care Services staff to distribute.  Also, funds from garden stone sales and Sunday School contributions sent to LSSM Foster Care totalled $1185.00!!  Please keep the children in prayer this week as they are blessed to be part of a camp experience with their siblings.

Non-Food Pantry is temporarily closed  but will reopen after the Rummage Sale.  Donations will be accepted after September 15th.  As we cleared out the Non-Food Pantry the remaining paper goods, personal hygiene and cleaning products went to Heartline and Freedom House.  When the donations were delivered to Freedom House the director asked if St. Paul had received a call for this help.  We explained that we had not received a call but were bringing a donation because of clearing out our pantry.  She said they were just about to call churches for help because they had run out of everything and were full with 40 residents!  And that was an example of how our God works in this ministry!  Amen.
