Pastor Gone
Pastor will be away on Interim Ministry training and vacation beginning July 20 after worship, and will return August 5.

Worship for the next two Sundays will be led by people from our congregation. Please support them through your attendance.

Pastoral emergencies will be handled by the Rev. George Oberle of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Roseville. In case of a pastoral emergency, death etc, please contact the St. Paul Church Office which will contact Pastor Oberle. During non-office hours, please contact Council President Dave Upmeyer.
Call Committee Update
The members of the Call Committee are continuing to discern God's will for our congregation, and our work is now entering a new phase.  After reviewing over 30 profiles from pastors across the country, we have completed the initial interviews of the five top candidates.  We are currently working on setting up second interviews with the three strongest.  We thank you for your prayers and ask that you continue to pray that God would bring us the right candidate for St. Paul and that we would be able to see that person when presented to us.

Gateshead Summer Celebration August 1
St. Paul will be hosting a picnic lunch for the seniors at Gateshead Senior Living Community on August 1.

Hot Dogs and an Ice Cream Sundae Bar are on the menu.  Plan to be part of this event!  Details to follow.
Calling all rummage sale volunteers!
St. Paul has been very fortunate to receive 3 partial estate donations. We will need many hands to help sort, display, price and sell, especially in the Boutique.  Can we count on you? The Boutique is still looking for a chairman and someone who has the time to tag jewelry (not price). This task can be done at home during the summer. If you can help in any way, please email Sandy Brown at browngpf@aol.com Your help will be greatly appreciated.=

For the Rummage Sale - September 12 and 13.  If you are good dealing with people and money, we need one ( or two) people to head up the check-out table during the Rummage Sale.  The time commitment - roughly 8:30 AM-4:00 PM Friday and/or Saturday of the sale. We can divide up the responsibilities between several people or it can be given to one person who is available both days.

Also, people to assist with setting up electronics, sports, tools, and linens. Also, some to help provide and prepare lunches and/or donate snacks, drinks, and desserts.

August 1 is the start date for bringing in donations during regular office hours.   It is helpful if you separate and label items according to category.  Thank you for your prayerful consideration of ways you can participate in this important ministry at St. Paul.     Contact Liz Jenzen at ejenzen@ameritech.net or 313-882-3986.
LWR and Christ Iroquois School Supply Collection

Also, if you see any bargains on small calculators, backpacks, pencil sharpeners. Lined filler paper, blunt end scissors, rulers, crayons, and pens, please pick some up.  A collection bin will be in the foyer for donations.

Living the Word
Week prior to Sunday, July 27, 2014 Devotion

"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 8:38-39

Some people refer to John 3:16 as "the Gospel in a nutshell." Personally, I think these two verses from Romans are an even more powerful summarization of the good news God has made known through Jesus.

I find myself frequently sharing these verses in funeral services. While I cannot guarantee what impact they will have on those gathered in grief, I know these words strengthen me as I strive to comfort others. Paul's conviction lifts up my spirit. As I read his expansive list which tells us nothing separates us from the love of God in Jesus, but does so in such a beautiful way, I find my own courage increasing. "Thank you, God," I say to myself, "that not even death can take us away from your love."

How good it is to be reminded this week that these words have power for us in times of living, as well as in times surrounding death. In the midst of our daily routines and decision making, nothing separates us from God's love. Whether we travel far away or close to home, we are held in God's love. As we experience the joys and disappointments of human relationships, nothing can sever God's relationship with us. When we find ourselves wanting, and falling short of our expectations for ourselves, God still loves us - and always will.

Nothing, no thing, no things, not a thing can separate us from God's love made known in Jesus. May we be convinced of this.

Odds and Ends
Crossroads East and Christ Iroquois Lutheran:Donations of nonperishable food and personal hygiene items in our food cupboard are being shared with Crossroads East at Salem Memorial and the food pantry run by Christ Iroquois Lutheran in Indian Village.   When grocery shopping please help stock our food cupboard located in the narthex.   There is still a great need within the Metro Detroit area.  Thank you for your continued support.

Taizé Worship Services:
A summer Taizé worship service will take place at St. James Lutheran Church, 170 McMillan, Grosse Pointe Farms, on Wednesday, August 6, at 7 pm.  You are welcome to attend!  The beauty of Taizé worship is that it uses a form of short musical phrases with sing able, easily-memorized melodies.  The community of Taizé in France has worked for unity among Christians in all denominations.  The service will include Holy Communion for those who wish to partake.
Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.
Saturday, September 20, Dr. Mitri Raheb will be giving an all-day seminar titled Enhancing Christian Reach & Relevance.

In order to prosper and grow-or simply survive-today's Christian congregations are being forced to rethink their traditional approach to outreach and evangelism. Now, as never before, we are challenged to leave our traditional comfort zones, find new ways to share the Word, expand our methods of communication, explore innovative venues for worship, give voice to suffering and injustice, and make our message more relevant to more people.
