June 1
The Witness of the Lutheran Church in the Holy Land
In the midst of starkly challenging circumstances in the Holy Land, come see and hear about the powerful witness of our Lutheran Church.

Presenter:  Bonnie Steketee

Living the Word Sunday School

In place of Sunday School Families with children are encouraged to attend the brief service of interment for Christine Hanson at the close of worship when her ashes will be placed in the ground of the memorial garden.  This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to the St Paul Columbarium.   Christine's  family was the St Paul community.  Next week the children will plant their garden next to the driveway.

Vacation Bible School

Registration for VBS will open next Sunday, June 1.  There will be an afternoon kick-off event on Sunday, July 13.  VBS for children in preschool- grade 5 will be Monday, July 14 through Friday, July 18, from 1 to 3:30 pm, and an evening worship event Thursday, July 17.  For more information, please contact Dana Miller 313-343-0923.

Harmony @ Home

Each season we have several activities designed just to help loved ones live in harmony together.

The Call Committee is Working Hard!
Now that the Discernment Committee has finished up, the Call Committee has started meeting. We will be reviewing candidates that are interested in coming to St. Paul, and will interviewing a few hopefully in the next few months. After the interviews are conducted, we will be presenting our choice to the church council, who will then have to approve the nominee before they will come and preach at our church. After this, the congregation will meet and vote on the candidate.  For a complete step-by-step view of the process, click here.  If you would like to nominate a candidate, please click here.

While we are working very hard on this process and ask for your prayers and support, we are not in charge of this process. We are trying to follow God's plan, and we ask for your patience as we do this. If you have any questions or suggestions for nominees, please contact either Tim Reisen (treisen@comcast.net or (313) 670-2651) or Michele Miller (michlmil@umich.edu or (313) 729-9600). Thank you for your patience and support!
Upcoming Milestone Celebrations
MILESTONE CELEBRATIONS

Stepping into the World June 8
The St Paul community celebrates the journey our young people begin from home into the world with the High School graduation milestone.  Parents bless their children with quilts made by hand with love and prayer by the St Paul Pieces Be With You Quilt group.
Odds and Ends
GARDEN STONES  that are hand crafted by the middle and high school youth will be sold over the month of May.  Garden stones make great Mother's and Father's Day gifts, and confirmation and graduation gifts.  Proceeds from this effort will go to purchasing a new basketball hoop for the Wayne County Family Center, ELCA Disaster Relief and LSSM Foster Care.

Supply Preaching: The Worship Committee is inviting laypersons to lead worship/preach during one or more Sundays of pastor's vacation time. The remaining date is July 27. . For more information please speaks with Pastor or Susan Kvale.

Pastor Fred Harms received his recognition of retirement and 40 years of pastoral ministry  from Bishop Don Kreiss, Bishop of the Southeast Michigan Synod ELCA at the Synod Assembly on May 17, 2014.

RUMMAGE  SALE  NEWS

You may notice a brightly colored box in the corner of the Fireside Room near the coffee set-up.  If you have been saving bubble wrap, tissue paper or brown grocery bags we can certainly use them at sale time to wrap purchases. Just drop them in the box.  Thank You.
Thrivent Supports Outreach
thrivent
Our own Lutheran Financial insurance and investment company (formerly AAL and Lutheran Brotherhood) receives very high marks within the business community.   Thrivent products are now open to all, but are especially designed for Lutherans.    We can be proud of how they had the foresight to become a fraternal organization-sharing profits with policy holders rather than being a company who pays taxes on profits.

Annually, our church receives designated money from Thrivent members (if you own products, consider listing St. Paul as your "choice" for receiving this money).  In addition, our church received Chapter matching money for fundraisers held during Lent.   Through a 50% match of the $2,000+ raised during 5 Lenten Dinners, the Easter Breakfast, and a fundraiser for Mission Trip to El Salvador, many people will be helped.    The money raised & matched will benefit:   St. Paul's Youth Choir Program & Musical, World Hunger, LSSM, and El Salvador Mission Trip.    THANKS THRIVENT for ongoing support and this $1,000.

If you'd like to know more about this fraternal investment and insurance company, go to their website or contact church office for  representative in our area.

Foster Care
May is National Foster Care Month
Want to know more about our foster children and ways you can help?

Talk with experienced foster and adoptive parents who can answer questions and guide you through the system.  Contact the Foster Care Navigator Program at 1.855-MICHKIDS or www.fcnp.org or the Adoption Navigators at 800-589-6273.  See our waiting children at www.mare.org

This month we lift in prayer the LSSM Foster Care programs.  Lutheran Social Services of Michigan has been providing services for children and families since 1934. They are Michigan's largest private foster care agency, helping more than 800 children every day across the Lower Peninsula. Their experienced staff are passionate about their desire to help foster families create a better life for the children in their care.  Their goal is a safe home for every child.
