Adult Education
April 27, 2014
The presenter for this adult forum will be Imam Hassan Habhab. Imam Habhab is from the Islamic Institute of Knowledge located on Schaefer Road in Dearborn.
The Institute was founded in 1983 and is dedicated to serving the needs of The Islamic Community in the Metro Detroit area.
In a part of its mission statement, The Institute dedicates itself to promoting the understanding of Islam and the Muslim People by providing accurate and balanced information to the community at large.
In addition to a Mosque and activity building, the Institute operates a 400 student K-12 charter school, a Funeral Home, and a modern print shop which publishes a monthly magazine and other materials.
The Imam will discuss some of the basic tenets of Islam and its relationship with Christianity and will be available for questions and answers.
Living the Word Sunday School
The children and Middle School youth will learn about Christ's resurrection from John 20:1-8. The High School and Middle School youth will sell handmade malaria net pins before and after worship to raise money for the ELCA Malaria Campaign's inaugural work in Namibia, and they will begin work on their next project.
Catechism Class Schedule
Class meets Monday April 28 and May 5. On May 5 there will be a parent meeting at 7:30. Confirmation rehearsal with dinner for the whole family is May 12 beginning at 6 pm. Confirmation is Sunday May 18 at 9:30.
With joy we enter the Easter season. Here are ways to celebrate the Risen Lord (and Earth Day)!
The risen Jesus appears to his disciples and guides them to an overwhelming catch of fish and feeds them with a seaside breakfast. Experience the joy of the risen Jesus' presence by retelling the Bible story, decorating placemats, and enjoying a snack on an imaginary beach. (Young Families)
Celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by planting flowers in pots to give to those who are sick or homebound. Show people you care by bringing flowers that they can watch grow and bloom. (Young Families)
In the northern hemisphere, Easter conveniently coincides with the renewal of the earth. This is the time when many turn their thoughts to the annual ritual of planting. Even if you are not a gardener, let this season remind you of new life. Just as Christ rose to new life, so we can participate in the new life of the natural world surrounding us. (Adult / Couple)
Each day during the Easter season, take time to lift up "Alleluia" moments. Remember these joy-filled moments by creating a paper chain to hang in your home. (Young Families)
Each of the Gospels tells about Jesus' friends who found the empty tomb on Easter morning. The story of Jesus' resurrection doesn't end there. Read about Thomas, who had trouble believing that God really raised Jesus from death. (Young Families)
Make an Easter promise to tell the good news. (Young Families)
Watch the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly to inspire a time of reflecting on the meaning of the Resurrection. Christ promises that we will share in a resurrection like his, enjoying new life forever in God's kingdom. (Young Families)
Listen to what one kid has to say about faith. Create a poem, a rhyme, or a picture to illustrate your understanding of faith. (Just for Kids)

ELCA World Malaria Sunday:
| Every year, millions of people around the globe observe World Malaria Day on April 25. The ELCA Malaria Campaign is turning this day into a special week, observing World Malaria Sunday on April 27.
World Malaria Day is an opportunity to remember those who have died from malaria, honor those who live with the daily realities of the disease and renew our commitment to join the global movement of people who are making malaria history. See more at: http://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Relief-and-Development/ELCA-Malaria-Campaign/World-Malaria-Day#sthash.yqgmWaHs.dpuf
If you have your Mosquito net pin from this fall, please wear it to church on Sunday, April 27. The high school class will be selling Mosquito net pins before the service on this day with proceeds going to the ELCA Malaria Campaign.
Prayer for World Malaria Sunday
Today, World Malaria Sunday we remember those who have died from malaria, we honor those who are struggling with the realities of the disease today and renew our commitment to join the global effort to defeat this disease.
We ask God to comfort those who are grieving loss of loved ones, especially children who have died from this disease. We ask God to strengthen and give peace and hope to those dealing with symptoms and repeated bouts of illness. We ask God to continue to send the workers that are inspired to go out into the field and work with the communities that are battling malaria through prevention, education and treatment. We ask God to send hope and encouragement to them as they see their efforts making a difference and saving lives.
We ask God to open our hearts to the needs of our Lutheran brothers and sisters in Africa, especially Malawi and Namibia where life-changing malaria programs are being initiated. We ask God to keep those in need on our hearts and minds today and throughout the year by lifting them in prayer and through stewardship.

Discernment / Call Process Update
Council Highlights from the April 16, 2014 Meeting
| Discernment / Call Process Update
The Church Council reviewed and approved the Ministry Site Profile at their April 16 meeting. This is the document that describes us as a congregation, our ministry priorities, and the attributes we seek in a pastor. We will submit the Profile to the Synod as the first step in our call process for a new pastor. The Synod will review this document and begin to send us names and resumes of potential candidates. Council expressed many thanks to the Discernment Committee for their great work in preparing this document. They will provide counsel as requested to the Call Committee, but the bulk of their work is now complete. The Call Committee is meeting May 6 to plan for the interview process.
Council Highlights from the April 16, 2014 Meeting
In addition to review and approval of the Ministry Site Profile (see separate message), Council took the following actions:
*Approved a funding request to support the Youth Choir Musical "Malice in the Palace" to be presented May 4 at 4:00 pm.
*Approved Substitute Music Salaries for Organist and Chancel Choir Director
*Approved two 2-week Holidays (vacation in the US) for Pastor Ulmanis per his contract. He expects to take the time during the summer of 2014.
*Appointed Bonnie Steketee and Dave Upmeyer as delegates to the Synod Assembly May 15 - 17. Pastor Ulmanis will also be attending.
*Approved inter-fund cash management procedures to assist in cash flow.
*Received an update on Youth & Family activities planned for 2014 - 2015. A highlight will be the National Youth Gathering coming to Detroit in July 2015. There will be many volunteer opportunities related to this event.
