Living the Word
Adult Forum:

April 13:
Handel's Messiah - Handel's Oratorio

Messiah chronicles the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is one of the greatest musical compositions of all time and is regularly performed throughout the world, more than 250 years after it was composed! In this Adult Forum, we will take an in-depth look at the biblical text behind the music concentrating on the selections based on Christ's passion, death
and resurrection. We will explore why certain texts were chosen and Handel's musical treatment of the text.

Presenter: Bob Mobley

Living the Word Sunday School

The children and Middle School youth will learn about the passion of Christ. The High School youth will plan to participate in the ELCA Malaria Campaign's inaugural work in Namibia as part of the observation of World Malaria Day on April 27.

First Communion: Welcome to the Lord's Table Milestone

Social Action Update
Thank You to the 16 volunteers that spent Sunday preparing and serving at Wayne County Family Center's "Spring Fiesta"!  The residents enjoyed the taco buffet and the Bingo for all ages and Egg Hunt for the children.  We were amazed to see how many children were living there and we were glad to have many hands to hold babies and toddlers while mothers ate and served their other children.  Our high school youth served an ice cream sundae bar and played basketball with the children outdoors.  It was a blessing to be able to support WCFC in this way and the Social Action Committee is proposing additional ways in which we can support this arm of LSSM.

Odds and Ends
Delegate Needed

Our Synod Assembly is coming up May 15 - 17 at the Adoba Hotel in Dearborn.  This year it is a joint assembly with the North / West Lower Michigan Synod.  The Assembly runs from 4:00 pm on Thursday May 15 until about 12:30 pm on Saturday May 17.  We have an opening for a male lay person to attend as a voting member.  Appointments will be made at the April Council meeting on April 16; this is also the early registration deadline.  If you are interested in serving as a voting member, or would like more information, please see Dave Upmeyer (upmeyers@hotmail.com, or 313 881-9522) before April 15.   Thank you. u.

AA Celebrates an Anniversary
The AA Early Birds celebrated their 28th anniversary at their annual St. Patrick's Day open meeting.  As is their tradition, the program consisted of a recounting of their history by the founding members and a sobriety countdown which resulted in over 750 years of combined sobriety reported by those present at the meeting.  The meeting leader ended her remarks by expressing appreciation for the support of St. Paul as the "one constant" throughout their history.  AA provides our congregation a meaningful way to share the Body of Christ and our facility with those we consider part of our St. Paul community.

Learning Time On The Move...
Beginning the first week after Easter Sunday, Tuesday morning Bible Study will become the Wednesday morning Bible Study.  The time is the same, 9:30 am. First Wednesday study group is April 23.  If you have not been part of this study where we look at the coming Sunday's Scripture readings feel free to join the group at any time. No experience needed and each session stands on its own so you can join any time!

Now that spring is here . . . wink, wink,
it's time to think about spring planting.  Help is needed at church with planting flowers in the planters and occasional watering.  Please let the Church Office know or contact Steve Gillespie at 313.885.2537.
2014 Budget Update
The good news is that we are $6,700.00 in the black so far this year. The bad news is that we have some catching up to do in our envelope giving. The financial statement for February was presented at the March Council meeting and it shows that we are $25,000 behind our budget through February. So how can we be in the black and yet be so short in our year to date budget?

The answer is that the normal Endowment Fund revenue for the year was received in January as a lump sum and this one time revenue makes us look better off than we are. This year the normal Endowment Fund support is $32,000. When we look at just our envelope giving, it is the primary reason for the budget shortfall. The envelope giving of pledged givers is $13,000 below budget and our non-pledge offerings are down by $9,000.

If you are behind in your giving, please consider ways you might catch up over the next couple of months. Together we can turn this trend around and move forward toward the goals we have set in this transition year.
