January 19: Hymn Study
Presenter:
Rev. J. Krister Ulmanis
Learn the history of some of your favorite
hymns.
Living the Word Sunday SchoolToday the children will learn that just as John pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God, our Pastor points us to this same Jesus, who grants us forgiveness, life and salvation. Children from age 2 to Grade 5 meet in Sandrock Hall for the opening and then move to their classroom for the lesson where they may be picked up at 11:30 am. The middle school youth will discuss the realization of Jesus as the Messiah and that, like the first disciples, we too hear the call to follow Jesus. The high school youth will prepare their upcoming service projects.
First Bible Milestone Children in Grade 3 and older are invited to participate with their parent(s) in a training workshop in fulfillment of some of their Baptismal promises. The workshop is from 9 - 10:30 am on Saturday, January 25, with a milestone blessing in worship on Sunday, January 26. Please contact Mary Mobley if you would like to participate (885-0529).
Thrivent Builds Trip
St Paul is forming a team to work on a Habitat for Humanity build in El Salvador through the Thrivent Builds Worldwide July 26-August 3, 2014. For more information visit the St Paul website Link. Many people say, with all sincerity, that they are "spiritual, but not religious." Others, no less sincere, cannot survive spiritually without their church. And most are somewhere in between. Church affiliation is waining in the U.S. and in many parts of the world, yet studies show it's still a key factor for passing faith to the next generation. What's your relationship with Church and religious practice. These faith activities might help. Religion and Jesus (Young Adult) - what's your response to the "spiritual but not religious" argument? * In anticipation of Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday (Jan 19) take a look at I Dream, You Dream.

Council Notes

Two council positions still need to be filled
We are still looking for members to fill the Worship and Treasurer positions on Council. These are both important positions, but are also two of the better organized and staff-supported positions on Council. Patti Dougherty and John Gellasch, respectively, would be happy to discuss the duties and responsibilities, as would I. Thanks for your consideration of this important way to serve St. Paul. Dave Upmeyer
Council Highlights from January 15 Meeting
Council took the following actions at our January meeting.
* Passed a recommended 2014 budget for Congregational approval at the Annual Meeting. This budget shows a positive operating income of about $3000 for the year, and provides for:
o Salary increases for staff except for recent hires
o A potential interim AIM if we decide we need one this year
o Increased benevolence giving for missionary support
o Increased funding for several programs
*Approved a revised Policy and Procedures Manual that documents many personnel and policy issues not previously defined. Much good work done on this by Administrative Chair Ken Steketee.
*Decided not to hold a Council retreat this year.

Family Preservation Programs
|
"Serving people as an expression of the love of Christ" How do children end up in the foster care system and is there a way to prevent this from happening? LSSM has created Family Preservation Programs that help keep families together. Protect MiFamily and Eastside Wrap Around are new programs that intervene with at-risk families in the Metro Detroit area Please keep LSSM's Family Preservation Programs' staff and clients in your prayers this month. The High School youth and the Social Action Committee are sponsoring a Pajama and Blanket Drive for LSSM's Family Preservation programs. Please bring new childrens' pajamas and blankets to church that you wish to donate. There will be a collection bin in the foyer next to the LSSM poster. Also, on January 26th, there will be a Pajama Party for the children after Sunday School, during the Annual Meeting. All children are invited to wear their pajamas to church on this day (or bring them to change into) and join in on the fun! Games, crafts and a movie are planned! Any high school or middle school youth who wish to help with this program should contact Mrs. Weiland (313-885-6326)
