Living the Word Sunday School
|
Adult Forum:
October 27: Stewardship - The Other Side of the Coin Presenter: Richard Grenzke
How do we get beyond stewardship as a fund raising activity? What other aspects of church life are affected by stewardship besides fund raising? Hear some ideas and bring some ideas. Come on in and kick around some new ideas with Stewardship Chairperson, Rick Grenzke.
Living the Word Sunday School
Preparations for the Christmas program have begun. Please make every effort to have your child in regular attendance as we prepare. The date of the program "Christmas Past and Present" is Sunday December 15 at 10:45. All children and youth are encouraged to participate!
This week in Sunday School the children will learn the story of Jonah and learn that just as Jonah was swallowed up in the belly of the fish for 3 days, so Jesus, in His crucifixion, was baptized into the sea of death, drowned in our sin and spewed forth alive again after 3 days that He might save all people. Middle School youth will discuss what it means to live by faith, and recognize the importance of God's impartial love and justice. The High School youth will continue their efforts to support Transition to Independence (TIP) at Wayne State University for children at WSU who have "aged out" of the foster care system and do not have adequate resources or support systems. St Paul youth will write notes of encouragement and prepare care baskets for the 15 TIP children that St Paul is sponsoring. These baskets will be presented at a dinner hosted at WSU by St Paul's Social Action Committee on December 6. Anyone who would like to provide further support for the baskets or the dinner should contact Mary Weiland.
Vibrant Faith @Home: Fitting In
Yep, we know, Halloween isn't till next week. But as you make plans for costumes, parties, treats, etc., we hope you'll also plan your faith response. After all, Halloween is the feast that acknowledges a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Try one or more of the activities below. (Next week we'll explore All Saints and All Souls Days.)
Halloween (Just for Kids) - learn about it's meaning for Christians, and then have some fun with it! A Helping Halloween (Young Family) - go beyond costumes, treats, and partices and make it also about giving. Lighting the Darkness (Young Family) - help children be less fearful around Halloween. Halloween Thank You (Teen Family) - make and deliver Halloween thank-you cards to neighbors who have been generous over the years. Frankenweenie (Just For Kids) - tips to help you think about what kind of spooky things are worth worrying about!

Youth News

Thanksgiving Meal at Park Place - We are looking for at least three parents to help chair and co-chair the Thanksgiving meal on November 24th for the Seniors at Park Place of Harper Woods. This is a wonderful service opportunity for our young adults to show their faith by serving others while working along side their peers. If we can not get the volunteers for this much needed event by November 2, it will have to be cancelled. I know this will be a terrible disappointment not only for the Seniors of Park Place, but for our young adults as well. Please consider giving your time for this service event and thank you in advance. If you have and questions or concerns, please email or contact me at 313-469-1064. Blessings, Shawn

CHURCH COUNCIL POSITIONS
| In December the Congregation of St. Paul will vote to fill Council positions for Vice President, Treasurer, Christian Education, Worship, and Social Action.
Although it is a serious commitment, serving on Congregation Council is a rewarding experience and a great way to serve our Church. Please give this thoughtful consideration.
If you are interested in running for one of these positions and would like additional information, please contact Jack Diesing via email at jack.diesing@ally.com or by phone at (313) 882-5988.

|
Please continue to lift up in prayer this month the Home Care Services division of Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. Pray for God's peace and comfort to the families of the homebound elderly and their caregivers. Pray for disabled adults and their families that God will strengthen and uphold them in His loving care. Pray for the care providers of LSSM Home Care Services and their support staff that they will be strengthened and not grow weary in showing God's love and kindness to the patients and families they serve. .

Freedom House
| We celebrate with Freedom House, their 30th anniversary of providing shelter and care to refugees. Our "Pieces Be With You" Quilt Ministry has provided handmade quilts for the residents of Freedom House and they will be on display in the Narthex and the sanctuary this Sunday, October 27th. The quilts will be blessed during the service and presented by members of the quilting group.
A Congregation's Prayer for Refugees (adapted from Psalm 126)
v. 2 "Then it was said among nations, the Lord has done great things for them."
Merciful God, we ask this for refugees today,
Restore the fortunes of those who have lost everything,
Keep safe those who have fled war zones and persecution,
Quench the thirst and hunger of those who have experienced drought or famine,
May they find refuge with You and shelter through many who welcome them.
May they see justice and experience healing from all they have suffered.
God, be gracious to them,
Pour out your compassion so that it overflows.
Help them leave behind their sorrows and tears
And come to a new home joyfully
With an abundance of blessings. Amen |
