October 20:  How Should We approach Our Financial Stewardship?
Presenter:  Richard Grenzke

Let's talk about different approaches and attitudes when it comes to our financial support of the ministries at St. Paul.  Join Stewardship Chairperson, Rick Grenzke in a look at the different ways people can use in determining their level of support

Living the Word Sunday School
Preparations for the Christmas program begin this Sunday!  The date of the program is Sunday December 15 at 10:45.  All children and youth are encouraged to participate! Regular attendance is an important part of making this event enjoyable for the children.

This week the children will learn the story of Naaman and Elisha from 2Kings 5 and connect the cleansing of Naaman with the cleansing of our sin by Word of God and the water of Baptism.  Middle School youth will discuss prayerful perseverance and the encouragement Jesus gives us to be steadfast in prayer.  High School youth will meet with Dr. Angelique Day to learn about Transition to Independence (TIP) at Wayne State University. Our High School students are preparing care baskets for TIP students that will be completed on October 27. Suggested items for the baskets can be found at http://www.tipwaynestate.org/care-packages.html

Vibrant Faith @Home: Fitting In
This week's recommended activities focus on fitting in, even among those with whom you grew up -- family and friends. How are you accepted by those who love you? Who are your true friends? How might you make room for those whose friendships and resources are limited? Read Luke 4:14-30 and then try one of these activities.
Friends (Just for Kids) - while they're the best part of life, friendship isn't always easy.
Where Would You Go? (Young Family) - explore what it might be like to be God's people in a different place.
Cost of Fitting In (Teen Family) - how can you ensure everyone gets to participate in important events?
Back Home (Young Adult) - Jesus made a trip home that didn't go so well. How do you respond to those who see you only as you used to be?
Homecoming Horror Stories (Adult/Couple) - explore your own experiences of homecoming and what it means to "go home." http://www.vibrantfaithathome.org/
Trunk or Treak
On Saturday, October 26th from 4pm-5:30pm Youth and Family will be hosting a Halloween Trunk or Treat night.  This will be a community outreach project and we need volunteers to park their vehicles in the parking lot and hand out candy to the little ones in our community.

Please help to make this a safe and family friendly event by donating your time and a couple bags of candy.  To add to the fun we are going to have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize for best decorated vehicles of the eve.  The fun will not be stopping after the Trunk or Treat, from 5:30pm-9:30pm Youth and Family along with our Children's Choir Director will host a pizza party/movie night for St. Paul congregation families and their friends. Dressing up in character is encouraged! We will be showing Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone and serving pizza, fruit tray, veggie tray and drinks.  There will be a charge of $5 per person.  Please sign up for these events in the Welcome Center and come and enjoy a magical evening with friends!

Council Highlights from the October 16 Meeting
At our regular October 16 meeting, Council took the following actions:

*Began the process to form two committees to implement the call process for our new Pastor - a Discernment Committee to formulate our mission going forward, and a Call Committee to review candidates, conduct interviews, and recommend a candidate.  Council developed a list of potential members to serve on the committees and will be contacting them to determine if they are willing to serve on one or both committees. We hope to form the committees in the next ffew weeks, and complete the discernment process by early 2014. We will then proceed to interview candidates.

*Approved job descriptions for all Church staff.  Many thanks to Administrative Chair Ken Steketee for meeting with staff to update these documents.  Most staff reviews are completed;  the rest will be completed in the next few weeks.

*Approved moving expenses for Pastor Ulmanis.

*Reviewed the various choices for healthcare insurance for our lay full-time employees, and selected a plan consistent with ELCA recommendations and the new Affordable Healthcare Act.

*Approved hiring Patti Dougherty as Administrative Services Director - Finance to assume the duties of retiring Corine DeWit and the finance duties currently performed by Gretchen Archinal.  Gretchen has requested that her hours be reduced as she has taken on other full-time employment opportunities.  This is a temporary assignment for now, but will be reviewed in early 2014.

*Discussed long-term salary needs for the Music staff.  Worship Chair Tom Marini will bring recommendations for adjustments to the November meeting.

*Reviewed the Stewardship mailing proposed by Chair Rick Grenzke.  A theme of "Giving From Abundance" has been adopted.  The upcoming year will present many opportunities to expand our ministry; please continue to support the mission and ministries of St. Paul.  More information to follow.

Full minutes will be available when approved.  The Council's next meeting is November 20.  Please continue to pray for our congregation and your Council in this period of transition.
CHURCH COUNCIL POSITIONS
church council In December the Congregation of St. Paul will vote to fill Council positions for Vice President, Treasurer, Christian Education, Worship, and Social Action.

Although it is a serious commitment, serving on Congregation Council is a rewarding experience and a great way to serve our Church. Please give this thoughtful consideration.

If you are interested in running for one of these positions and would like additional information, please contact Jack Diesing via email at jack.diesing@ally.com or by phone at (313) 882-5988.
