Gleaners
Next Gleaners Food Bank workday is Saturday, October 5 from 1-4.  Celebrate the blessings of fall by helping those in our area that are hungry!  Please sign-up so we can submit a head count for planning purposes.  Our goal is to have a group of 20 attend.  Sign-up poster is located in the narthex or call Shelley Reisen at 882-8099.  Meet at the church at 12:30 to carpool.  Please note that due to the nature of the work involved, Gleaners prefers age middle school to adult participating in this event.

Recognition of Pastor Collier on October 6.
pastor collier

Come to a thank you brunch honoring Pastor Collier and his family for their 13 years of service to St. Paul immediately following the 9:30 church service on Oct. 6.  A goodwill offering will be collected for the Collier family and there will be a basket available for cards of thanks and good wishes.  If anyone would like to contribute an egg casserole (baked from home) or come on Sat. Oct. 5 at 11:00 for set up and cooking, please contact Peg Upmeyer, 881-9522 or upmeyers@hotmail.com.
Living the Word Sunday School
Friday, October 4 is the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, perhaps the most beloved of all the saints. Francis was a man of peace who loved and cared for all of God's creatures. The first Sunday of October is also World Communion Sunday, a day to celebrate God's work toward peace and justice through the global community of Christ. With these important dates in mind, gather with loved ones, or with just yourself, and engage in one of these activities:

Saint Francis of Assisi (Just for Kids and All Ages) - remember Francis for his poverty, simplicity, and inspiration.
Celebrating Family Pets (Young Family) - follow Francis' example and celebrate the pet in your home.
Teaching Gentleness (Young Family) - foster caring interaction between toddlers and pets.
World Communion Sunday (Teen Family and Adult/Couple) - the global community of Christ strives for peace & justice.
I Am... (Young Adult) - explore your identity and how faith fits into the picture.

Trunk or Treak
On Saturday, October 26th from 4pm-5:30pm Youth and Family will be hosting a Halloween Trunk or Treat night.  This will be a community outreach project and we need volunteers to park their vehicles in the parking lot and hand out candy to the little ones in our community.

Please help to make this a safe and family friendly event by donating your time and a couple bags of candy.  To add to the fun we are going to have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize for best decorated vehicles of the eve.  The fun will not be stopping after the Trunk or Treat, from 5:30pm-9:30pm Youth and Family along with our Children's Choir Director will host a pizza party/movie night for St. Paul congregation families and their friends. Dressing up in character is encouraged! We will be showing Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone and serving pizza, fruit tray, veggie tray and drinks.  There will be a charge of $5 per person.  Please sign up for these events in the Welcome Center and come and enjoy a magical evening with friends!

Support the Quilt Ministry at St Paul's
quilters
Sunday Oct 20th and 27th after the church service, the Pieces Be with You quilt group will be selling various items made by group members to help defray the cost of supporting the work done at St Paul's.  Many of these items would make great Christmas gifts.

        17   Graduation quilts
         5    Confirmation Stoles
         6    Comfort quilts
         1    Quilt for the Harms

Pieces Be With You meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM.  Come see what the group is up to anytime.  And, please support the group by purchasing a handmade item after church on Oct 20 or 27.

CHURCH COUNCIL POSITIONS
church council In December the Congregation of St. Paul will vote to fill Council positions for Vice President, Treasurer, Christian Education, Worship, and Social Action.

Although it is a serious commitment, serving on Congregation Council is a rewarding experience and a great way to serve our Church. Please give this thoughtful consideration.

If you are interested in running for one of these positions and would like additional information, please contact Jack Diesing via email at jack.diesing@ally.com or by phone at (313) 882-5988.
Stewardship Update
So Where Do We Stand on Our Budget:
As of the end of August, our "Envelope Giving" is behind our projected budgeted amount by $15,000. Our total shortfall in revenues is $12,000 due to more "All Other Support" income than budgeted. That's the bad news.

The good news is that our expenses are significantly lower than budgeted. The total of "Salaries" and "Fringe Benefits" are $18,000 less than budgeted. This is primarily due to Pastor Harms retiring at the end of May and Pastor Ulmanis not coming on board until September. "Utilities" are also down by $3,000 and "All Other Programs" is down by $3,000 compared to the budgeted amount for the end of August.

So the bottom line is a Net Income of $22,000 as of the end of August. This is ahead of our budgeted Net Income of $12,000.

Is Stewardship Your "Thing"?
I would like to create a committee of 3 to 5 people to help in the stewardship function of our ministry. This will entail more than just pledge drive activities. If you are interested or would like more information on the activities, contact me either via E-mail at rgrenzke@gmail.com or leave a note in my mail box at church.

Let's Discuss Stewardship at St. Paul!!
I will be leading Adult Forum sessions on October 20th and October 27th. The first being financially oriented and the second being ANYTHING BUT financially oriented. Please plan on attending.

Thank you,
Rick Grenzke, Stewardship Chairperson

Social Action Update:
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ELCA, we are participating in the Malaria Campaign! This campaign has a goal of reaching 15 million dollars by 2015 - and the effort is more than halfway there with over 9 million dollars raised! Did you know? .....
A child dies from malaria every 60 seconds.

Today we are in a special moment where we could turn this around. Working though Lutheran churches in Africa, the ELCA Malaria Campaign is uniquely positioned to provide mosquito nets, insecticides, medication, health care, education and more to help eliminate deaths from this disease-for good.

For more information on the ELCA's Malaria Campaign see

As the hustle and bustle of back to school is underway - please lift up in prayer the youth who have aged out of foster care. These young people are taking on new roles as students or workers without family support and resources. Pray that they let God guide their decisions and know that He is always with them.

Our congregation member, Dr. Angelique Day, directs a program at Wayne State University, Transition to Independence (TIP) program that provides support to students that are entering college and have aged out of foster care.

Care packages will be put together with items that students need in the dorm and will be delivered in October. If you would like to help with this service project by donating items, please see the following link: http://www.tipwaynestate.org/care-package.html
Please contact Mary Weiland if you would like to participate at mary@weilandfamily.com
LSSM Connection
Family Preservation Programs

"Serving people as an expression of the love of Christ"

How do children end up in the foster care system and is there a way to prevent this from happening?  LSSM has created Family Preservation Programs that help keep families together. Protect MiFamily and Eastside Wrap Around are new programs that intervene with at-risk families in the Metro Detroit area.  Join us on Sunday, September 29th, in the Adult Forum to hear from program directors,  Audrey Williams-Burton and Therese Muir, how services are provided to these families.  Please keep LSSM's Family Preservation Programs' staff and clients in your prayers this month.
