Social Action Update:
| To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ELCA, we are participating in the Malaria Campaign! This campaign has a goal of reaching 15 million dollars by 2015 - and the effort is more than halfway there with over 9 million dollars raised! Did you know? ..... A child dies from malaria every 60 seconds. Today we are in a special moment where we could turn this around. Working though Lutheran churches in Africa, the ELCA Malaria Campaign is uniquely positioned to provide mosquito nets, insecticides, medication, health care, education and more to help eliminate deaths from this disease-for good.
The high school group is making mosquito net pins to sell as a fund raiser for the ELCA Malaria Campaign on Sunday, September 29th. The pins will be sold before and after the healing service. Wear your pins in support and remember to pray for our brothers and sisters, especially children who suffer from malaria.
For more information on the ELCA's Malaria Campaign see http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Responding-to-the-World/ELCA-Malaria-Campaign.aspx
As the hustle and bustle of back to school is underway - please lift up in prayer the youth who have aged out of foster care. These young people are taking on new roles as students or workers without family support and resources. Pray that they let God guide their decisions and know that He is always with them.
Our congregation member, Dr. Angelique Day, directs a program at Wayne State University, Transition to Independence (TIP) program that provides support to students that are entering college and have aged out of foster care.
Care packages will be put together with items that students need in the dorm and will be delivered in October. If you would like to help with this service project by donating items, please see the following link: http://www.tipwaynestate.org/care-package.html Please contact Mary Weiland if you would like to participate at mary@weilandfamily.com

Council Highlights from the August 27 and September 18 Meetings
|
At a special meeting on August 27, Council took the following actions:
*Approved hiring Stephanie Yu as Organist / Bell Choir Director. We are proceeding with the administrative procedures in completing her hiring; we expect that she will join us in early October.
*Approved establishing a Special Fund to support families of clergy in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). This fund will overseen by the Christian Ed Chair. Further research is needed to properly set up this fund.
At our regular September 18 meeting, Council took the following actions:
*Welcomed Pastor Ulmanis as our Interim Pastor. He has joined us as of September 1. A "start" meeting with council, Synod Staff and Pastor Ulmanis is being arranged for late September to clarify roles and responsibilities and plan the call process for our new Pastor. A formal installation service will be arranged, probably in mid-October.
*Confirmed plans for recognition of Pastor Collier on October 6. We will honor Pastor Collier and his family in our worship service, followed by a brunch in Sandrock Hall. There will be no Christian Ed on that day. The Synod and ELCA Global Mission may also have a sending program that day.
*Decided to establish two committees to implement the call process for our new Pastor - discernment of our mission going forward, and the interviews with potential candidates. Council will form these committees after our meeting with Synod staff in late September. The desire would be to complete the discernment process by early 2014, and then proceed to interview candidates.
*Reviewed job descriptions for all Church staff and approved an updated Policy and Procedures Manual. Many thanks to Administrative Chair Ken Steketee for meeting with staff to update these documents. Staff reviews will be held this fall.
Full minutes will be available when approved. The Council's next meeting is October 16. Please continue to pray for our congregation and your Council in this period of transition.

Fall Worship Schedule
| I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord!"
Psalm 122:1
The Council has approved the recommendation from the Christian Education and Worship committees for our one service format this fall.
We joyfully anticipate this new schedule which allows us to worship together as one church family. Our worship will be enhanced as we enjoy the choirs each Sunday, share communion and experience the milestone events together. This new schedule will allow teachers and leaders of the education program to build upon God's lessons from worship as they seek to write God's word upon the hearts of all His children.
May God continue to be glorified here at St. Paul as we move to this new schedule beginning September 8th.
Worship at 9:30 am
Education Hour at 10:45 to 11:30 am

Family Preservation Programs
|
"Serving people as an expression of the love of Christ"
How do children end up in the foster care system and is there a way to prevent this from happening? LSSM has created Family Preservation Programs that help keep families together. Protect MiFamily and Eastside Wrap Around are new programs that intervene with at-risk families in the Metro Detroit area. Join us on Sunday, September 29th, in the Adult Forum to hear from program directors, Audrey Williams-Burton and Therese Muir, how services are provided to these families. Please keep LSSM's Family Preservation Programs' staff and clients in your prayers this month.
